Midway Arcade Treasures is out...

    Xbox and PS2 versions are out now, and gamecube out on the 10th of December or so. Anyone pick this up yet? I plan to for the Xbox, and will probably on Friday or Saturday. On Xbox, it's got Live! scoreboards, so you can compete for high scores!!

    Just came in today on Xbox, and I noticed it was out on PS2 yesterday. $20, features the following:

    I will. Great games. Paperboy is a favorite of mine. I don't mind paying $20 to supplant the MAME versions. [​IMG]

    I don't want to veer this conversation into "bad" territory, but let me just say I believe MAME (whether you agree with it or not) likely had something to do with both the development and release of this anthology. The demand is obviously there.

    These are incredible arcade games. Everyone should pick up this set (assuming it's been done right).

    Probably, though there was a market for these games before MAME. I had the first Microsoft arcade collection, which had Missile Command, Centipede, Asteroids, and a few others. I think the original Midway package pre-dated MAME as well. It had Sinistar, Joust, Bubbles, Defender, and a couple more. I think even people who like MAME will drop money on these games, but they have to stop recycling the same games over and over. This one begins down that path, by offering games I've not seen packaged before. That's not to say they weren't; there were quite a few packages for the PS, I believe. I've never really checked into those too closely.

    Now, if someone was smart, they'd package all of the Exidy shooters together, maybe for use with a lightgun peripheral.

    Is that list accurate? I thought Moon Patrol was supposed to be included.

    I'm still trying to figure out why they have relabelled "Stargate" as "Defender II". Perhaps the folks behind SG-1 had something to say about that?

    I can't remember the exact reason, but IIRC Defender II was the original title of the game and then it was changed in many places to Stargate. So both titles have been around since the game was made and both are valid. I remember when I was a kid, I saw both versions and could never figure out why they had different names if nothing was different between them [​IMG]

    Really? I never saw it called "Defender II". Just "Stargate". Weird.

    I believe Midway bought Atari's arcade division and thus own the rights to those games now.

    You have a good point, Greg. But high-profile commercial arcade packages - some of which have arisen post-MAME (late nineties) - have traditionally included a meagre offering (less than ten) of poorly-emulated titles with skimpy extras (if any). There seems to be a stronger effort now in retro-packs to provide not only more seamless emulation (which the early sets, particularly from Microsoft, did NOT provide, particularly versus the home-brews) but to beef up the titles per set and include extras that might sway even the most rabid emu-head. This "extra effort" (which is really what they should have been doing all along) I see coming from the retro-publishers almost exclusively post-emucraze.

    I do agree with you. The packages I mentioned were kind of fun little niche programs, but MAME is huge (I assume that's still true; I haven't checked the scene in a number of years). It proved that the games could be reproduced perfectly, and that there's a massive market for them.

    Every review I read said it was bad because of the controls. However, I'm buying it anyway. Also, the videos were the same PS1 crappy MPEG1-type videos instead of redoing them for MPEG2.

    As for MAME, there were collections of these LONG before MAME was popular. I had the Atari collection for the PS1, but there was no analog controls at the time [​IMG]. I had to find one of those pseudo-analog controllers which I still have.

    Is the Xbox one acutally OUT? I thought it was on Tuesday. Everywhere I go it says 12/2. I saw the PS2 version today at BB.

    The little microsoft arcade packages were cool in concept. (the atari 2600 packages were around a long time ago, but I'm talking arcade not console) I remember playing games like centipede, pac man, galaxian on my PC and thinking, "I do recall the arcade looked and sounded a whole lot better..."

    Were the reviewers saying the control itself is unresponsive/bad, or that they prefer arcade controls to pads? (if the latter, it's no big deal; i prefer control pads since i grew up on them)

    Has anyone heard whether or not the emulation itself is decent? That's sort of the selling point for me.

    Ok, I picked it up today for the Xbox.

    It's a really good mix of games, as we already saw. They did a VERY good job mapping the controls as best they could.

    Marble Madness plays well, but suffers from the minute responsiveness you need from a trackball.

    Defender no longer needs the "Reverse" button since you point your stick in the direction you want your ship to go.

    Sinistar just kicks ass.

    Klax is a great addition since I haven't played it in over 10 years.

    Super Sprint's controls are downright AWFUL.

    Gauntlet's a no-brainer since it has some of the most basic controls so how can you go wrong?

    Robotron uses BOTH analog controls and it too, kicks ass.

    Spyhunter's almost impossible to play...pass.

    That's all I got a chance to play so far.

    Also, the Xbox version allows you to upload your scores to an Xbox Live server so that you can see how you rank.

    I picked this up over the weekend as well. For $20, you can't go wrong.

    Smash T.V. got most of my playing time. You can basically just continue-on, forever. A lot of the games play the same way. Unlimited use of quarters to continue-on.

    Gauntlet let's you buy as much health as you want. My wife says it sounds like a bad porno, though. (Old-school sound effects)

    720° was fun to play again, but awefully hard without the trackball/stick. I've never been very good at this game to begin with.

    Marble Madness was just down-right discouraging. I guess I'll need to keep practicing.

    Paperboy was certainly a throw-back. I'll be playing some more of this.

    Roadblasters allowed endless continues as well. Damn true to the arcade, and lots of fun.

    Toobin' requires practically every button on the pad, so I'll need to practice this one.

    Rampage also allowed endless continuation. It got a bit repetitive, though.

    I don't think the list from Kyle's first post is correct, though. I played some type of "Root Beer Tapper" game that I remember from the arcade, and Commodore64, and it too, was pretty fun.

    I'd like to see Karate Champ come out. I like the games with two joysticks. Karate Champ was a personal favorite.

    Unfortunately, the wife let me play with the game for a few hours, then wrapped it up as a gift for me to open on Christmas.[​IMG] Oh well. 24 games, 24 days left. Almost fitting.

    I can't wait to bust out some more Smash TV. "Big money, big prizes.... I love it!"
