MGM 90th Anniversary Set ? (1 Viewer)

Per Amazon it is being released on Tuesday December 24, 2013 as Volume 1 10 film set and a 20 film set.
Anyone have information on this set?

I guess this will be all UA previously released films but it would be a nice surprise if it contained something new like the Kazan sets released last year by Fox Connect. If they lease any real MGM films from Warner Bros. they will most likely be previously released films such as Blazing Saddles being included in the Fox Mel Brooks set. I assume anything new would be released by Warner Bros itself .

I'd be fine if it was all new, or even 50% new.

However, if they plan to pull that same thing they did with that old "MGM Musical Collection" or Fox's 75th Anniversary DVD Collection that had 2 previously unreleased Eddie Cantors and Cavalcade respectfully thrown in with 20+ discs of rehashes, essentially expecting me to pay $200+ for one or two exclusive movies then I will be very unhappy.

It's amazing that the release is a few days away and nobody knows anything about it.

I have been on the studio press sites and don't even see a listing for it.

So, it's a big mystery right now.

Shouldn't Warner Bros. be releasing a 90th Anniversary MGM set, since they have the rights to all the, y'know, actual MGM movies and what's left of MGM, ummm, doesn't? The current MGM entity has certainly not been around for 90 years. SONY is now ensconced on the old MGM lot (what's left of it), so maybe they should do some celebrating also, right?

I remember attending MGM's 50th anniversary retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art and seeing all kinds of great stuff like HOLD YOUR MAN (1933), LASSIE COME HOME (1943), SHOW BOAT (1951), SCARAMOUCHE (1952), FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956), and THE TIME MACHINE (1960) on the big screen in the summer of '74. Has it been 40 years already?

Now that the list price has been brought down, I'm thinking it's going to all be rereleases. Videoeta.com lists West Side Story, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Casino Royale blu-ray rereleases coming in January with the byline "MGM 90th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD." Maybe they aren't part of the set, but it seems very likely they are. I wouldn't be surprised if they threw The Hobbit in there.

I think there are a few that didn't revert to WB. I think that Octopussy and A View To Kill can be considered official pre-'86 MGM films that they managed to hold onto thanks to the separate Eon deal. Are there any others from the 60s or earlier that MGM somehow managed to hold onto through some sort of independent rights juggling? Usually there are a few outliers that manage to stay with the company (like pre-'48 Paramount). Otherwise, pretty much everything else officially an "MGM" production that's actually still with MGM was made after 1986.

Another odd thing is that when MGM/Fox released the 90th Anniversary UA DVD box sets, they called it the United Artist 90th Anniversary set(s). If they release films included in that set, which is likely, in blu ray and call it the MGM 90th Anniversary set that really points out the meaninglessness of timing releases to 00 and 05 anniversaries.

Vic Pardo, whoever you are, I was there at MoMA as well in the summer of '74. Also for the Paramount retro in '72; the WB in '73, etc. Wasn't it great to see these great films in gorgeous archive prints?

Not Gone With The Wind. That was a Selznick International Picture. It was distributed by Loew's Inc. (owner of MGM at the time) in exchange for the loan of Clark Gable . In addition to Gable, MGM gave Selznick money for the film in exchange for distribution rights and a percentage of ownership of the picture. MGM eventually owned all of the picture when Selznick International was dissolved in the 1940's. It was not made as an MGM picture. Though David Selznick worked as a producer at MGM in the mid 1930's. he was an independent producer at the time Gone With the Wind was made.

Oh, I always thought Gone had Leo the Lion raoring at the begining. Maybe that was the VHS copy I saw that had Leo's roar at the start.

Upside as a company they are celebrating their 90th Anniversary; the downside is that they are a far cry away from what was once the glory of Hollywood’s golden age. And while honestly we know that the classic MGM film library is in the hands of other distributers, there are still other films that they have control of. Various titles from UA that haven’t seen an HD release, or for that fact a proper HD release (The Greatest Story Ever Told)

This collection of collections is more than likely going to be re-releases of titles previously released, I can see the awards winner one containing possibly In the heat of the Night, but that is because it is already scheduled for release. And I understand the business model, as it is an easy way to repackage everything.

I personally would like to see something different, and yes I know that very few of these titles are MGM, more MGM/UA holdings but here goes new set ideas. Take into consideration that I have omitted some titles that I think Shout/Scream, Criterion and Twilight might have in the works.

The Pink Panther (Blake Edwards) set including the one that Universal has (and dear lord leave the Steve Martin films out of it) and all original Cartoons.

MGM Film Noir Set Volume 1: Woman in the Window, Kansas City Confidential, The Stranger (I know 2 of the titles are now PD, but MGM has or should have the negative and could produce definitive versions). Much like WB’s gangster set it would be a must buy.

The Black Stallion: Deluxe Edition, CCBB and Fiddler on the Roof amount of effort into this presentation.

And while not film The Outer Limits (Original Series) this set needs the same effort as was done for TZ.

just an idea, but if its all a repackage, lost of people will pass, considering they probably have already purchased most of it.

Using the link in my first post, Amazon shows both the 10 and 20 movie sets as unavailable . "We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock. " They are no longer taking orders.

There are now three other blu ray listings at Amazon with 2/4/14 release date. Anything labeled "Best of" will most likely be previously released films in a new package. Award winners will probably include "In the Heat of the Night".
