Since this list was somewhat popular last year, I thought I'd do it again this year.



With Memorial Day being this weekend I thought I'd share a list of the various war films that will be showing on TV.

It's been a tradition since I was a kid that my dad and I watch a few war films on Memorial Day Weekend. Anyone else have a tradition like this? All times are Central, check your local listings.

Brian, I am afraid I am not sure when Memorial day is, but in Britain we commemerate the War dead on the 11th November and Rememberance Sunday.

I think watching a war film on htese days is very apt.

However, I was wondering why these films listed were all re WW2 ? We are reminded of our war dead from many other wars, The Boer War, Crimea, Indian, Penninsular etc...and I enjoy remembering these campaigns with such films as Waterloo, Charge of the Light Brigade ....

Whilst WW2 is very recent in our history, I find it a real shame to forget the efforts shown by others only a generation or so earlier.

I read recently that there are only a few dozen living British survivors of the First World War trenches, when they are gone in a year or two, will the horrors of the Somme and Paschendale, seem as distant and forgotten as Lucknow, Ladysmith or Sebastipol ?

I'd love to see them put other titles on the air, but alas I don't work for a TV station. Might have to throw in my crappy VHS tape of Waterloo though now that you've brought it up. Been a while since I watched that one.

Since they are US stations and it's for the Memorial Day holiday here I wouldn't expect them to show Zulu or any titles like that as it doesn't involve wars the US participated in. Although if you follow that thinking I'm not sure why they're showing Captains of the Clouds as that's about the RCAF IIRC.

I do wish we'd see some good films about things other than WWII here in the US. Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Spanish-American War would all be great to see, not to mention some more Civil War stuff. I'm affraid how ever they'll never get made because I'm the only one who'd want to see them.

Brian, is Waterloo not released on reg1 ?

the reg2 release isn't too bad, no extras, but just great to watch this on the projector in OAR......

I understand, that Zulu wouldn't be shown, although are we sure Hollywood aren't planning a remake ? ( I can see denzil and Hanks facing up to each other on that one )
...however, I would add Gettysberg and Glory to your list.

Brian, I am afraid I am not sure when Memorial day is, but in Britain we commemerate the War dead on the 11th November and Rememberance Sunday.

We commemorate 11/11 over here as well. It is (was) known as Armistice Day in the Sates and was (as in the UK) just for WWI.

But, WWI has not nearly the meaning for us as for Europeans (or the ANZACS). It is not considered by most to be quite so important.

What are the chances that AMC will show films such as Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Deer Hunter and Force 10 From Navarone in their original widescreen aspect ratio? AMC's track record on OAR recently has been very bad.

They've shown Tora! Tora! Tora! in oar before IIRC. Don't know if they will this time though. Luckily I have those three on DVD so if I decide to watch them I'll do it that way.

I find TCM's lineup to be much more impressive with some less known films & few repeats over the weekend when compared to AMC.

AMC will likely show the pan & scan versions. The only letterboxed movie they seem to air now is Married To The Mob. :|

Whoa, I didn't realize Memorial Day was this upcoming Monday. (I seriously lose track of days).

Well, I have a pretty good way of spending it as The Bridge on The River Kwai arrived in my mailbox today. So I will watch this movie for the very first time over Memorial Weekend.

Thanks for the heads up on the titles and showtimes. I plan on watching The Deer Hunter and maybe a couple of others.
