There is a high security prison about 4 miles from my house. The only time I even think about the place is when I drive by on my way to a golf course in that direction. The barbed wire double fence, guard towers and vehicle patrols between the double fences might disturb me if I had to look at them from my home, though. BTW, a Home Depot is being built across the street from the prison, and new $400,000+ homes are being built within 1/2 mile of it.

but rank ahead of nuclear energy plants!
I don't know why people have such a hard time with these. I love my local nuclear reactors. We've got an energy plant, a fast flux test facility that produces medical isotopes, and who knows how many reactors on the Hanford reservation where they built the nuclear bombs we dropped on Japan.
I could care less. I get (relatively) cheap electricity, the air is clean, and they employ thousands of people. I've lived here since I was 3 and I've never once worried about a nuclear meltdown. Most nuclear plants are incredibly safe. People just need to find something more realistic to worry about; the chances that you're going to be killed or injured by a nuclear power plant are so remote as to be laughable. You'd be better off worrying about more realistic things, such as the sky falling on your head.
As for this prison, I wouldn't worry about it. Make sure your house is well-lit, put some motion detecting floodlights out front, and keep your windows, doors, & vehicles locked. Standard practice whether you live near a prison or not. You should be just fine.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you do criticize them, you'll be a mile away and you'll have their shoes.

Yeah, what's wrong with nuclear plants? There's one within my city limits, near an Indian casino. It's one of the best run power plants in the world - rarely any problems, although the anti's like to create all sorts of disaster scenarios. So there - I have a prison, although not a maximum security one, a nuke plant and a casino all within a few miles from me. I don't worry about any of them.

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa To the funny farm. Where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!!!

Someone mentioned prison families moving into the town. Well, I guess this may be true. The last couple of years I have noticed more strangers in town and since my brother works at the prison I've found out they are prisoners families. Some are not the most upstanding citizens themselves I'm sorry to say. For a while, the prison administration moved prisoners around from prison to prison so the families more than likely would not follow them from town to town. I'm not sure if they are still doing this or not.
I guess every place changes over the years and maybe I am more sensitive to these changes now. It's still pretty quite and peaceful here so I won't complain too much.
