I have been using my DP870 as a "preamp" until I settle on a real preamp. One of my frustrations is the need to manual control the volume since I don't have a remote. I have tried several programmable remotes but none seem to work. The back panel has a int/ext remote switch, but I can't seem to get any results. Any advice?

Actually, you can use it with a remote but it is not qutite that easy. If you can get hold of a marantz RC 2000 remote for a while you can teach the commands and then use it. The switch has to be in the internal position. This processor was made to go with either SR870 or SR96THX. That is why you cannot buy just any programmable remote and use it. I did use it for several months using the learning function of my pioneer remote. So, it is possible. Good luck.
