The dvd will be ONE DOUBLE-SIDED DISC. Thanks, Universal.
Posted by KEVIN SMITH on July 11th:
Here's the new scoop: it IS a single disc. DVD Answers was correct. BUT, it's a TWO-SIDED DVD
Here's how the ONE DISC/TWO SIDED DVD lays out, thus far. Naturally, this is subject to change.
I'll mark what's new (stuff made for this edition) and what's old (from the previous DVD release).
SIDE 1
THEATRICAL CUT (OLD) · ORIGINAL ON SET CAST INTERVIEWS (NEW) · A BRIEF Q&A WITH KEVIN SMITH (NEW) · THE ERECTION OF AN EPIC - THE MAKING OF MALLRATS (NEW) · BLOOPERS (NEW) · VIEW ASKEW'S LOOK BACK AT MALLRATS (OLD) · FEATURE COMMENTARY (OLD) · THEATRICAL TRAILER (OLD) · THE GOOPS "BUILD ME UP BUTTERCUP" (OLD)
SIDE TWO 2 · KEVIN AND SCOTT'S INTRODUCTION (NEW) · MALLRATS RE-CUT (NEW) · MALLRATS CAST REUNION Q&A SESSION (NEW)
There are also three new Easter Eggs buried in that disc as well. Sadly, due to space constraints, we had to lose the optional angle on the old commentary track from the previous "Rats" DVD, and there's no new commentary track either (again, we ran out of space). Regardless, this new, 10th anniversary special edition is PACKED!
I think the audience would agree with me there?
When asked what happened to the deleted scenes, Kevin playfully remarked "The deleted scenes are back in the movie, dumbass. That's what the recut of the flick on Disc 2 is all about."
When asked why there wasn't a new commentary, Kevin replied "We never recorded a new commentary track. Mos (Scott Mosier, producer/editor) and I just felt like everything there was to say was said in the old commentary track, the new doc, the Q&A, and the new intro to the new cut."
So, it looks like we're missing a few things from the original DVD, like the multi-angle viewing option (hey kids! watch Kev & co... talk into mics...) and the introductions to the deleted scenes (God bless Vincent Pereira).
Those who wish to ask questions to Kevin directly or simply wish to keep up with the DVD news can visit the thread at View Askew: viewaskew dot com/theboard/viewtopic.php?t=36036&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=o
I was present at that q&a, and thoroughly enoyed it. I think you will too. Most everyone involved told some good stories.
There's no point in having introductions to the deleted scenes if they're back in the recut version of the film, but there will be some that couldn't be cut back- specifically, the "alternate" openings, like the "flashback" one with the long Jason Lee voice-over and freeze-frames introducing the characters.
I really hope Universal corrects the apparent flaws with their DVD-18 manufacturing that caused so many of us so much grief with the recent CASINO dual-sided/dual-layer release ( http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...ghlight=casino ).
You beat me to it. Until they prove that this problem is resolved, I will unfortunaately not be purchasing this title. I've been burned too many times.
Hopefully it will be another intro where Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier talks about nothing for 8 minutes. Maybe they can talk about Eddie Van Halen this time. "Hey, Scott. Did you know Eddie Van Halen was in a band called Van Halen?"
It's been awhile since I've seen the original opening but I remember thinking "I can understand why this was cut." There was some really funny stuff but there was also some stuff that didn't work too. Maybe re-edited it'll work better (for me anyway) and the original cut is on there too so the disc is the best of both worlds
Well, the theatrical cut does lose that brilliant cameo by the dashing young man with a shaved head who plays Svenning's PA in the original opening. I've always felt that this was the true reason MALLRATS didn't do so well at the box-office back in 1995
I believe someone that posted on this thread mentioned being there at the Arclight screening of the new cut
Is the "DePalma Crane Shot" opening (with the hysterical performance of Elizabeth Ashley as the Governor) back in this version?
I know I'm in the minority, but for me that was worth the old DVD, I LOVE this version of the opening, it just seemed to push the film into a 'bigger' (broader comedically, not neccesarially larger production wise) place, that it benefits from.
To see that opening, finally in good quality and cut into the film is worth the price for me. If it ISN'T there in some form (perhaps those alternate openings Vincent mentions are used in the documentary?) I won't be getting this.
I may be wrong but I think the new cut only exists on video (or in other words, there is no actual print of the new cut) so the Arclight screening would have been the theatrical cut. Like I said though, I could be wrong.
Did anyone else catch Kevin Smith on Degrassi The next generation a few months ago? I only saw the tail end of it so im not sure what his role was, but it was definatly him.
Being the huge Kevin Smith fan I am, i'm ashamed to admit that i had no clue HTF's Vincent P was THE Vincent P.
I'd imagine the Archlight supports DLP projection, so there's no reason they couldn't have shown a High-Definition tape of the new cut of MALLRATS. Granted, I wasn't there so I don't know what they screened, but they COULD have screened the new cut if it was completed back then. I know, for example, that during the Vulgarthon out there Kevin screened the long version of JERSEY GIRL, and that would only exist on video, too.
