This is pretty much how my connectors worked

There's a tab in the center with a small hole in it. I stuck the centre of the RG6 into the hole in this tab, and soldered it in there. This created a connection with the center pin of the connector. For the outer part of the RCA connector, it simply crimped around the cable. I then shrinkwrapped this all to make it stronger, and tighter. That's essentially all there was to it.

True, really long runs of S-video often don't have a satisfactory picture, at least not in keeping with their cost.

I've gotten better results than S-video with just a good single coaxial for a composite signal.

If it was me, I would get ahold of a DB15/component adaptor rather than use the adaptor that goes through the S-video jack on the X1.
