So what do we think we know about the additions to the Extended Edition so far? I'll try and list everything that has been rumoured or confirmed (in presumed running order):

- New scene of Frodo and Sam being pursued through Emyn Muil by Gollum; using Sam's Elven rope, they then descend a sheer rock-face, and at the bottom decide to set a trap for their stalker

- Extended daytime sequence in Emyn Muil of Sam putting the Elven rope round Gollum's neck

- New scene of Eomer finding the wounded Theodred at the scene of a massacre, and returning him on horseback to Edoras

- Extended sequence at the Uruk-Hai camp; the Uruks and Orcs squabble over power when they discover that the Hobbits are supposedly carrying a weapon of great power

- Extended sequence in the Dead Marshes, as Gollum attempts to explain to Frodo the effect that The Ring has on him

- Extended sequence of Gandalf fighting the Balrog

- New scene of Treebeard taking Merry and Pippin to his home; on the way, he explains the story of the Ent-wives (which explains why there's "too few of them now") and reads the hobbits poetry which sends them to sleep

- New scene of Aragorn and Gandalf discussing Sauron during the night; Gandalf tells Aragorn that Sauron is afraid of him, that he may become King

- New scene where Merry and Pippin wake up at Treebeard's home the next morning; they then proceed to drink the Ent-draught that heals their wounds and makes them grow taller and stronger

- Extended sequence of Frodo, Sam and Gollum approaching the Black Gate

- New scene of Theodred's funeral, where Eowyn sings a beautiful yet mournful durge (that presumably catches Aragorn's attention!)

- New scene of the horsehands trying to calm Brego, Theodred's distraught horse; Aragon soothes the horse and insists that he be set free, lest he see any more battle; Eowyn witnesses this and swoons

- Extended scene in the Golden Hall, of Eowyn serving Aragorn her finest (read=foulest) stew in an attempt to impress him

- Extended scene of Wormtongue arriving on horseback at Isengard and reporting back to Saruman about Aragorn; Saruman realises that Gandalf "thinks he has found the lost King of Gondor"

- Extended flashback/dream sequence of Aragorn talking to Arwen just before he left Rivendell with the Fellowship

- New scene of Arwen questioning her father Elrond about Aragorn's supposed fate

- Extended scene of the Hobbits' meeting with Faramir, in which he reveals how he knows of Boromir's death; we see a flashback to Faramir finding Boromir's horn cut in two on the riverbanks of the Anduin

- New scene of a flashback to Boromir and Faramir in Osgiliath; Boromir makes a rousing victory speech, then proceeds to celebrate with his younger sibling; Boromir's father Denethor, the steward of Gondor, orders him to go to Rivendell, where the One Ring is rumoured to have turned up; here we see Denethor's obsession with obtaining the Ring, and Faramir's failed attempts to impress his father; finally, a saddened Boromir says goodbye to his brother, gets his last look at The White City from afar, and departs for Rivendell

- Extended scenes at Helm's Deep showing more of the overall battle, including Eowyn and other women defending themselves against some Uruk's who have broken into the Glittering Caves

- Extended scene at the Entmoot, where Merry and Pippin further discuss with one another the Ents' part in the war with Isengard

- Extended scene of the Huorns leaving Fangorn to travel to Helm's Deep, just before the other Ents join Treebeard in the assault on Isengard (this explains why they appeared to arrive so quickly in the theatrical version)

- New scene at the end of the Battle of Helm's Deep, where the Huorns arrive, surround and slaughter the fleeing Uruk-Hai (hence why their numbers appeared to deplete so quickly in the theatrical version)

- New scene of Faramir leading Frodo, Sam and Gollum out of Osgiliath via the sewers; at the last minute, Faramir is almost overcome by the power of the Ring and grabs Gollum by the throat, but eventually he lets them go

- New scene of Legolas and Gimli comparing their kill counts in the aftermath of the battle; Legolas kills some left-over Uruk-Hai (perhaps from the Glittering Caves, or perhaps to save Gimli from them)

- New scene of Merry and Pippin discovering Saruman's secret stash of pipeweed and ale, thanks to Treebeard, while the other Ents continue their patrol around the perimeter for Orcs

That's about it, from what I can gather. Some of it is slight speculation, but it's mostly based on what I've seen in the Extended Edition preview. The things that strike me most from this list, are how much stronger the Frodo/Gollum bond will be, how much more sense Faramir's actions will make, how much more rounded the relationship between Aragorn and Eowyn will be, and how much more interesting the Ents will be. Also, Merry and Pippin's actions have a far greater effect on Helm's Deep, if you think about it. These are pretty much the areas where I had problems with the theatrical version, so here's hoping....

On the running time issue, see the following quote from Variety about theatrical releases of the FotR & TTT EEs prior to RotK's premiere this December (more on this in the TTT/RotK thread in Movies):
The plan calls for putting the films on 100-150 screens in the top 10 U.S. markets. Many other U.S. cities will have one cinema participating in the special extended edition screenings. Running times for the extended editions are 208 minutes for "Fellowship of the Ring" and 214 minutes for "The Two Towers."
So here's another confirmation of the 9 minute discrepancy. I'm betting we're getting a number of alternate scenes/takes. This makes the theatrical version of TTT a must-buy, IMO - not that I wouldn't have bought it anyway!! :D
