Today's Los Angeles Times Calendar Section contains several DVD-related articles.

These articles are also available on-line at:
    http://www.calendarlive.com/movies/video/
(Site registration is required - I believe).

    The articles are as follows:
How the Moguls Came to Love Retail
DVD Sales Figures Turn Every Film Into a Mystery
129 'Best' Films: Rich, Risky and Enduring
Rival Formats in a Duel to the Death
    Scrambling for 'Eggs'

    There's also a couple of release-date lists:
    Selected Movie Releases Scheduled
    Selected TV-to-DVD Releases Scheduled

From Peter Rainer's list of 129 Best Films on DVD, I count at least five of the films which are not available in Region 1 (including Double Indemnity, which is long out of print):

    Chimes at Midnight/Falstaff
    (Orson Welles, 1966)

    Double Indemnity
    (Billy Wilder, 1944)

The Earrings of Madame De …
    (Max Ophuls, 1953)

    Lady With a Dog
    (Josef Heifitz, 1959)

    Napoleon
    (Abel Gance, 1927)

It's always fun to dissect such lists.

Films on that list that I agree should be there: 34
Films on that list that I don't think should: 59
Films on that list I haven't seen: 32

Obviously a list I disagree with more than I agree with and with way too many glaring omissions.

When I saw the Calendar edition, I was hoping for some kind of included DVD, like the Times once gave away.

Like Brian PB, I thought the first list (of supposedly
available titles) had several errors. In addition to
the titles Brian PB listed, I thought the inclusion
of "The Nun's Story" and the original "Sounder"
was either a mistake or misleading.

In the chat, I believe Warner stated "The Nun's Story"
    is, at least, forthcoming.

Was glad to see Steamboat Bill, Jr. and Sweet Smell of Success on Rainer's list, two great films that often get severely overlooked.

One major glaring omission, however, is Bride of Frankenstein. EVERYONE should own that film.
