Long overdo upgrade after terrible accident (1 Viewer)

Hey everyone,So 5 minutes ago we had a power outage and my wonderful run-of-the-mill speakers passed away.

I'm a total noob when it comes to speakers and power ratings, but as far as I understand best case scenario I need speakers that can be powered by an amp rated at twice their RMS wattage. My question is, since according to best buy the receiver can provide 165 Watts to each channel (is this true? I went to specs and it said 75W peak power per channel), will this box be able to power these Polk Audio T600s?

How did a power outtage take the speakers "out"?If you do need new speakers...pay zero attention to "watts". Meaningless. You care about ohm load and efficiency. Since this is entry-level, stick with 8ohm.I would pick nothing lower than an 89db efficiency.

And yes, those Polk work. They are 8ohm(sad that BB doesn't care to show that) and 90db efficient. Probably more efficient than what you had.

Sweet, thank you kindly for answering my question.
The problem was that it was not just a power outage, I had a buddy who's an electrician's apprentice mess with some wires, so to speak. 3 blown out lightbulbs and 2 dead speakers later, here I am looking for a new rig.Question as to how loud these speakers would get when considering the receiver I have at hand; would it get loud without clipping and distortion, or should I be looking to get myself a new a/v receiver?

Also, to set these guys up, any idea if the gauge of the wire matters?

Clipping and distortion happens no matter what the speaker. IF these are more EFFICIENT than what you had...these will be louder, period.

I always use 12awg lamp cord. Although 14 or 16 is fine, unless you are talking more than 25 feet.

Even though 1db isn't Earth shattering, you are more likely to clip those...than the Polk. If you notice...you'll have a (slightly) higher chance to clip the lower "power rated" speaker.

Hence why I said..."wattage rating is meaningless".

Makes sense. Intensity wise, though, it's not a very significant difference, right?

In terms of speaker quality though, both are pretty low end from my understanding - but is one option a clearly better pick than the other when it comes to quality, would you say?
