no particular order except for the two groups, in making this list I realized I still haven't seen a bunch of movies that have already been released, and that this has been a crappy year in movies imo

movies I really enjoyed:
28 days later
kill bill
old school
elf
undead

ok movies to make it total 10:
matchstick men
pirates of the caribean
both matrixes
finding nemo

Top 10 Movies of 2003 (so far.....)

1a. The Matrix Reloaded
1b. The Matrix Revolutions
3. Finding Nemo
4. Lost in Translation
5. Bend it like Beckham
6. Mystic River
7. Whale Rider
8. Thirteen
9. Matchstick Men
10. American Splendor

Realized on 11-18 that I forgot to put Whale Rider in there. Doh!

I put City of God at #3 on my Best of 2002 list since it was first released then even though I didn't see it until this year.

Kill Bill is the only film so far this year that I know belongs at #1.

Others that I have thought highly of:

American Splendor
Finding Nemo
May
Down with Love
The Matrix Reloaded
Pirates of the Carribean

Some that haven't been released here: Lost in Translation, Mystic River, Master and Commander, Open Range, Gerry, Elephant

Not for me, and I think I missed more good ones than the number I saw (it was a very busy summer, and I have a lot to catch up on).

Taking off most of the ones from 2002 that I saw early in the year (such as Chicago and TTT), and the ones I saw that didn't mean anything to me (such as Willard, T3 and Freaky Friday) I saw and liked all these, in varying degrees.

++ denotes special favorites

Alien (Director's Cut)
++ American Splendor
At Five In the Afternoon
Bend It Like Beckham
Buffalo Soldiers
++ City of God
++ Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
Confidence
++ Dancer Upstairs, The
Dark Blue
++ Dirty Pretty Things
Distant
++ Down With Love
Drumline
Empire
Evelyn
Finding Nemo (1)
Forest
Housekeeper, The
I Capture The Castle
++ In This World
Intolerable Cruelty
Italian Job, The
Joy Of Madness
++ Kill Bill, Vol. 1 (1)
Laurel Canyon
++ Lost In Translation
Luther
++ Magdalene Sisters, The
Maldonado Miracle, The
Mambo Italiano
Manic
Matchstick Men
++ Matrix Reloaded, The (1)
++ Matrix Revolutions, The (1)
Mighty Wind, A
Mystic River
No Good Deed
++ Northfork
Nowhere In Africa
Off The Map
Open Range
Other Side of the Bed, The
Passionada
Phone Booth
Pieces Of April
Pirates of the Caribbean
Raising Victor Vargas
Recruit, The
Sea, The
Seabiscuit
Shape of Things, The
++ Spellbound (1)
Talk To Her
The Hunted

Man, I have a lot of current catching up to do too! Tomorrow I'm going to see 5 movies at our local theater's $5 Tuesday special. 3 on Wednesday, and 2 or 3 on Thursday.

What's with all of you who are putting RETURN OF THE KING on your top ten lists and YOU HAVE NOT EVEN SEEN THE FILM YET!?
#1 Star Wars episode 3. Oh wait, that's not till 2005, although I am predicting it to be on my top ten list.:)

I have also seen 28 Days Later show up on a lot of pepoles list. Is there something that I missed? I absolutely hated that movie and anyone I know that has seen it has said the same thing. I'll take Night Of The Comet over 28 Days any day of the week.

I also agree with Vickie--it's been a great year for movies. I've seen over 110 movies this year, and spent an unholy amount of money on tickets, DVD rentals and purchases for 2003 films. And so far, I have been pleasantly surprised at the ratio of good movies to bad. For the record, my current Top Ten is:

1. Capturing the Friedmans
2. Spellbound
3. American Splendor
4. The Hulk
5. Irreversible
6. Pirates of the Carribean
7. Bus 174
8. Down With Love
9. Finding Nemo
10. He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Many honorable mentions go to: Alien: DC, Blue Car, City of God, Dark Blue, The Event, Master and Commander, Matchstick Men, Raising Victor Vargas, Shattered Glass, Stevie and Whale Rider, all of which received 3.5 stars from me.

As far as I'm concerned, 2003 has been a fantastic year for cinema, and the remaining November/December releases look to make this year even stronger.

I don't think we should start criticizing another person's list just because we don't agree with a film or two that is on the list. That is not the purpose of this thread.

Well, I don't think I've seen enough movies to make a Top 10 list. OK, I HAVE seen more than 10 films, I just can't put those movies in a Top 10 list.

So, I'll do a Top 5 instead:

1) Lost in Translation
2) Kill Bill, Vol. 1
3) Finding Nemo
4) Whale Rider
5) Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl

In order:

1. Morvern Callar
2. Lost In Translation
3. Kill Bill vol. 1
4. All the Real Girls
5. The Man Without a Past
6. Dracula: Pages From a Virgin's Diary
7. Regarding This Jewison
8. Spider
9. Être et avoir
10. A Mighty Wind

Plus,
Talk to Her
Ten

And I have a certain admiration which goes hand in hand with hatred toward Irréversible.

Here is my list in no real particular order

1.Piglets Big Movie (first movie my daughter saw at a theater, sat in my lap the whole way through with a look of awe on her face :) )
2. Daredevil (sorry Ben haters, I liked it)
3. X2
4. Open Range (VERY pleasantly suprised as I just haven't seen a Costner flick I liked in a while)
5. Finding Nemo
6. The Matrix Reloaded
7. Lost in Translation
8. Kill Bill vol1
9. Old School (Your My Boy Blue!!)
10. The Italian Job

Honerable mentions go to Underworld and T3 becuase I really didn't expect much but was pleasantly supprised.

I wont say these are the "Best" 10 Movies this year but I guess these are the 10 that I got the most entertainement value from.
For the record I haven't seen Master and Commander...yet. And I expect that ROTK will make my list.

It was not my intention to "thread-crap", but regardless of what anyone may say, the Matrix sequels are plain bad. And I think the original film is a late-90s classic; definitely on the Top-10 list for 1999 for me. The sequels are just lazy. But that's just my individual taste. As far as my list for this year, here it is, in alphabetical order. I haven't seen Les Triplettes de Belleville, but from reading about it and seeing the trailer, I have no doubt it will remain on my list.

Dirty Pretty Things
Finding Nemo
Identity
Kill Bill: Vol. 1
Life of David Gale, The
Matchstick Men
School of Rock, The
Triplettes de Belleville, Les
Willard
X2

So which is it? An omniscient statement that takes precedence over everyone else, or merely an individual opinion?

So which is it?
As I'm aware of it, both sequels were pretty much failures, as far as critics are concerned. As a big fan of the original, I can agree with that. Those who don't are clearly fooling themselves. Sure both sequels had some flashy sequences, like the freeway chase, but cartoon action aside, the films were rather empty.

Oh what's the point :D

I only have a top five, as there are so many good films I haven't seen.

1) Reloaded
2) Finding Nemo
3) Revolutions
4) Kill Bill v.1
5) Pirates

Take care,
Chuck
