New York, NY - January 20, 2012 - Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Lech Majewski's The Mill & The Cross (2011), a "film of great beauty and attention" (Roger Ebert) that contains a stunning cinematic depiction of artist Pieter Bruegel's painting "The Way to Calvary", now brought to life with state-of-the-art special effects.

Kino Lorber released The Mill & The Cross theatrically in late 2011, starting with a successful (and extended) run at New York's Film Forum; the company is now proud to bring this acclaimed film to the home media market.

The Mill & The Cross (2011) ?comes to Blu-ray and DVD on January 31, 2012, with a SRP of $34.95 for the Blu-ray, and $29.95 for the DVD. Both come with special features, including "The World According to Bruegel", an in-depth documentary exploring the making of the film; an interview with director Lech Majewski; trailers and a stills gallery.

Adapted from the book by art critic Michael Francis Gibson, The Mill & The Cross is a fascinating reflection upon the world (and creative process) of acclaimed Flemish renaissance painter and printmaker Pieter Bruegel.

By placing Bruegel's work within its historical context, director Lech Majewski examines the events that took place in 16th-century Flanders, and imagines the ways in which politics and daily events took root in Bruegel's art.

For instance, the film transposes the crucifixion of Jesus with events that shook Flanders in the 16th century, like the brutal persecution of Protestants at the hands of the Spanish militia. It also depicts peasants in their daily routine, displaying how their lives often alternated between calm habits and violent assaults. All of these characters, Jesus and the Virgin Mary included, are now brought to life on an epic, cinematic scale, and the events in the painting are depicted with vivid period detail in this majestic period piece.

Rutger Hauer stars as Pieter Bruegel, in the process of creating his painting, as he explains his approach (and the genesis of his work) to a wealthy patron played by Michael York. Charlotte Rampling also stars, as the Virgin Mary.
