A VCR can record anything that is on your screen. Thing is, typical analog 480i is a max of 330 lines of resolution as it is transmitted. (DVDs are still 480i but look better because they use the full 480 lines of resolution.) VHS maxes out about 240 lines of resolution. So, VHS can record anything, but the quality is very poor relative to the other formats. 'Course, until digital VHS and things become affordable, not much a guy can do.
