Can somebody explain to me why a Iris fonction on a projector can enhance the contrast ratio?

I'll try.

As I understand it, the Iris serves to help reduce the amount of 'stray' light escaping from the projector through the optics. This stray light srves to wash out the blacks somewhat. Doing this reduces the overall apparent brightness, but since the stray light no longer washes out the darker shades, it makes the black 'blacker' without reducing the whites and thus increases the contrast ratio.
