All,

I am going to purchase the Panasonic ZT60 in a few months. I auditioned the VT60 and was thoroughly impressed with the picture and features; therefore, based in part on these articles which give a high level view of the ZT, I have decided to buy one. Enjoy! :)

The end of plasma and LCD will happen when 50" OLED arrives at $2000.And since "Joe Idiot Consumer" thinks OLED is a fancier LCD...plasma continues to languish. The way the picture is created...OLED has more in common with plasma. So if Joe Consumer would do his homework...LCD should die first...then plasma. Mainly because plasma is less expensive per inch.

I would also consider the Samsung F8500 plasma display if 3D is a priority, Samsung displays do 3D better as they are full hd, Panasonic doesn't do that, here is a review from a site i frequent a lot, you'll find me in their forums. Note its a great TV but not as good as Samsung for 3D and that's why i own an E6500 and not a Panasonic GT50, i wanted the best possible 3D, note that i refer to Samsung's of at least 60inch since the smaller sets aren't as good.

The relevant part of that review.

Given the Panasonic ZT’s status as an ultimate, top-end 3D plasma TV, we immediately wondered if it would feature full-resolution 3D output 100% of the time. The answer is no, it doesn’t: like nearly every Panasonic plasma 3DTV, the brightest and darkest screen updates are drawn at 1080p resolution, with intermediate brightness steps being displayed at 540p (a side-effect of a panel drive system known as “single-scan 3D”). That, quite perversely, means that this flagship display is bettered in terms of outright three-dimensional resolution by midrange Samsung plasmas

I am going to bring this thread back to life.

I currently own a 60" LG 3D plasma display. It was their top-of-the-line
model 3 years ago. At the time, I wanted a Panasonic, but I just happened
to have won the LG display in a raffle.

I want a Panasonic plasma before they are completely gone...forever.

Do I need to upgrade now? No. But, I want that famous near-kuro blacks
that the new Panny plasmas (VT60 and ZT60 offer).

I also feel that we are still years away from OLED being affordable, so if
I can get 3 years of pleasure from this Panny purchase before I feel the need
to upgrade again -- then all the better.

I have the chance to get a really good deal on either of these two models,
but there is at least a $500 difference in price between the 65" VT60 and ZT60.

I know that the ZT60 performs better in brighter rooms as far as black levels
are concerned -- but my home theater is always completely dark. So, most likely,
I am going to opt for the VT60.

From the reviews i have read i think the VT60 will give you the best possible value for your money especially if you calibrate it.

Thanks, Malcolm.

I am leaning towards the VT60, but always that burning question
of what if I didn't splurge for the absolute best rated display at the moment, the ZT60.

Here's my understanding of the differences between the ZT60 and VT60 series:

Advantages of the VT60 are:

[*]Slighly better speaker system, but also fatter left/right bezel
[*]Intergrated pop-up camera/mic system, the ZT60 does not have the camera/mic
[*]Slighly higher lumance, this also varies from sample to sample, but typically VT60s are 3fl to 5fl brighter than the ZT60
[*]Lower price, typically $500 to $800 depending on size and retailer
Advantages of the ZT60 are:

[*]Slimmer left/right bezel, so it has a slighly smaller footprint
[*]bonded final glass layer to the substract, whcih helps reduce reflections
[*]More agressive ambiant light filter, which helps preserve the black level when the room has ambiant light
[*]Better anti glare filter to further help reduce reflections
[*]Bragging rights for owning the flagship model
Hope this helps those deciding on which model matches your needs.

I bought the ZT60 primarily as a reference TV for when I do reviews. I figure it will be three years before the price of OLED will come down to an affordable level to replace the ZT60.

Once I get it, I will see if I can get it in the MB to replace the 55" LCD that I have in there now. I think it will be too big though.

I was never intending on buying until Panasonic had their latest and greatest. I thought that might be another year out.

I will right up a review on it after I get it and calibrate it. I'm curious to see how it performs on 3D with Stacey's test disc.
