If the solenoid was polarity sensitive there would be markings to indicate the power wire. Judging from your description it would not matter which wire is used as the hot.

If you are lucky you will find a replacement solenoid, having to replace the whole valve is a major PITA. At least you were able to find your valves, mine were buried in random locations all over the yard.
