I am not going to make a point of badmouthing this new film. I am hoping it goes in a better direction than the original.

I have made no secret in the past that INDEPENDENCE DAY is the absolute worst film I have ever seen. It makes my blood boil every time I see parts of it on cable, while turning the channels.

Really disappointed that Judd Hirsch is back. That means he's probably going to rehash the overly dramatic Jewish father role of the original.

My duty was to promote the new sequel. I wish it the best. I am being optimistic.

I'm sorry you hate the original film so much, but for me it was great back in '96 and has since gotten better with age every time I see it. I think it's a well-made blockbuster. I'm weary about a sequel, since the story was kind of a one-off IMO, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and catch it in the theater.

Wow, Ron. Weren't you one of the guys that attended Fox's Independence Day screening for HTF members in California when the film was first released on DVD?? I thought I recalled you being very excited about seeing it. Was that the first time you saw it?

I guess it depends on how you approach ID. My wife and I saw it on the big screen with some dear friends, and after only a few minutes realised that we must switch our expectations from taut sci-fi to high comedy.

We had a ball - a joyous laugh-fest - much to the annoyance of fellow audience members seated close-by. In fact seeing how seriously the audience was taking it only heightened our mirth. Our pleasure at that screening remains a treasured memory, and my apologies to anyone reading this that was seated nearby in the Perth cinema that day in the late-nineties.

Mark,

You have a better memory than I -- but yes, you are correct -- I attended the screening at Fox when it was first released on DVD.

I was excited about seeing it, yes. First viewing was decent, if I recall correctly. I do remember that my first thought was that Fox spent all this money on elaborate effects work and had to go budget on its cast. I mean Judd Hirsch and Harvey Fierstein? Really?! And both were awful in the film.

On subsequent viewings, when the film came to cable, I suppose I really analyzed the film more and realized that it was not only badly acted, but the character traits were highly exaggerated. I hated Pullman as the President.

Then over recent years, I have heard radio shows (such as Opie and Anthony) mock on the movie and play soundbytes that exemplify how campy this film really was.

Yes, perhaps, if I had regarded this film as a comedy I probably would have enjoyed it far more. I was one of those that took it more seriously, and as thus, I can't even look at it as a comedy today. For me, it's a disaster.

However, I don't want to continue thread farting. I really do hope this sequel does well. I am sure it will.

Still 20 years too late for this. I'm willing to bet on the same apathy that crashed Emmerich/Devlin's later colaborations showing up here.

I always thought Independence Day was fun. My biggest regret about the movie is that it ushered in a new era of disaster films and begat disaster porn. Hopefully the sequel goes in a different direction in that regard. We do not need to see any more of the world's landmarks destroyed on film.

I LOVED this movie back when it was released. As soon as I saw the teaser of the White House blowing up, I was hooked. I made sure not to watch any trailers because even back in the 90's they gave too much away. When it was finally came out, it exceeded all of my expectations and I saw it 6 times. The effects of the destruction was amazing for the time. Will Smith was still a fun actor in his prime. It was popcorn at its finest. From the title coming on screen BOOM, then breaking apart, BOOM, the date, BOOM, FLASH FLASH. Awesome way to set the tone.

I agree that this should be a one off. But we'll see, maybe the sequel can be fun. Jurassic World exceeded my expectations and was actually fun to watch. I never thought Fast and Furious would go anywhere after 2, let alone 3. So there's a chance.

Also I thought Brent Spiner died in the first.

Yeah, what he said ^^

It was an update of the original large cast disaster movies of the 70s like Earthquake etc, where you weren't sure how the large cast was ever going to connect and find themselves in one spot, and who would live through the whole movie, and with added humour on top.

Saw it opening night in Stockholm, got the LD, and then the DVD, and still watch it occasionally.

Still great fun, probably the best of Emmerich's movies, IMHO.

Independence Day was a stupid but goofy, fun movie with a good cast and interesting characters. Part of the fun was picking out bits that were plundered from other Sci-fi movies. Never thought it warranted a sequel and I'm not too interested in the follow up, will depend on the trailers.

Roland Emmerich's disaster movies hit the sweet spot for me, the right mix of playful tone and well-executed spectacle. And the original Independence Day will always be the most iconic of the lot.

As good as I'm sure Maika Monroe will be as Patricia Whitmore, I really wish they'd brought Mae Whitman back. Partly for the Boyhood effect of it being the same person, and partly because Whitman is one of the most talented young actresses working today. I can see how Monroe is a more marketable picture on a poster, but I think it was a real missed opportunity.

Ron I'm sure ID4 is NOT the worst movie you have ever seen.

I loved it, it's just fun.

I stand by my original description of Independence Day: It's War of the Worlds with a stupid ending.
Not Spielberg's version.

Ron, It's a popcorn flick! It's not intended to be high art. But it's also perfectly okay to dislike the film. I wouldn't describe it as one of my all-time favorites, but I do enjoy watching it from time to time.

ID4 is one of my favorite popcorn flicks. The only negative for me is that it basically blazed the trail of big-budget, special effects overload, 90% sizzle 10% steak summer movies we are now inundated with.

Ron,

At the risk of derailing this topic a slight bit.. I was looking at my photos from the Independence Day DVD release event at Fox studios. Here's one of them:

Isn't that you in the blue & white Hawaiian shirt?

No, but very close. I did have to look at it very, very closely.

Is he wearing glasses? If so, definitely not I. I did not start wearing glasses till late last year.

...and I don't own a shirt like that.

But it did take me a good minute to clarify.

Then Ron, I'm not so sure you did attend the Independence Day event at Fox on May 26, 2000. I don't see anyone else that looks like you in any of my photos. Thinking back on it, I'm thinking you asked me to be the photographer for the event because you couldn't attend yourself.

Hard to remember for sure... This getting old crap is for the birds! :)
