It's entirely because of cultural differences. What is potentially controversial in one region might be considered harmless in another. Try selling porn in Saudi Arabia. ;) I agree that it's ridiculous in that I don't find SotS offensive, but Disney just doesn't want to risk it in the U.S. Also, when was the last time Disney allowed the film to be shown on TV in Europe or Japan? The VHS and Laserdisc releases were some time ago.

SOTS was never once shown on television here in the United States, not even on The Disney Channel. It's one of two Disney movies that were never shown in their entirety on television in the U.S. (the other was Fantasia).

The whole thing has never been shown here (you'd think it would have been repackaged into WWoC at least once) but bits and pieces (Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, the Brer Rabbit sequence) have turned up in various specials over the years.

I'd like to see their Peter Ellenshaw classics like Mary Poppins, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, Third Man on the Mountain, Darby O'gill, Castaways, Island at the Top of the World, Gnome-Mobile, Love Bug, Sword and The Rose, Robin Hood, Treasure Island, Fighting Prince of Donegal, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Davy Crockett, Pollyanna, Happiest Millionaire, Absent Minded Professor, Blackbeards Ghost, etc.
