My only regret with this one is that they didn't go all out as with the Oliver Stone set and get other studios in on the action. I'd have loved new SEs of Bringing out the Dead, Taxi Driver, Casino, and Raging Bull to go with the rest of these films.

Are the extra features subtitled? (ENG? FR?). Thanks!

I am a huge fan of Scorsese's legendary Criterion commentaries "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver". As a part-time Independent filmmaker I devoured his comments about the technical side of filmmaking. He can look at a shot and tell you the exposure, lens size, frame rate, etc. The man is an amazing talent. Those commentaries should be required listening in every film school.
I listened to the commentary for "Who's that Knocking" last night. It's outstanding. Unfortunately, it only runs about 48 minutes. Scorsese gives the viewer more of a back story to his start- film school, short films etc. He admits he doesn't care much for WTKAMD. It was and still is one of my favorites. Look forward to the rest of the disks in this set. I only wish he did a full-length commentary for each one.

Vincent, no. I checked Goodfellas, ADLHA and WTKAMK for you.

Anyone know if Costco is gonna have the Scorsese collection tomorrow?

I remember the great deal they had on the Warner Marx Bros. set.

    Anyone know?

And if not, where's the cheapest place to pick it up? Best Buy?

I'm going to Costco tomorrow on a regular buying run. It's hard to imagine they could beat the $41.94 delivered Amazon price after considering the 7.75% sales tax Costco collects.

It'll probably depend if you take free shipping with amazon. If so, there's a good chance it'll be cheaper than Costco, whereas if you pay for shipping, chances are good, that if Costco carries it, it'll be cheaper, even with the sales tax, based on my past experiences comparing the two.

With an Amazon STL, this set sells for only $37.75 w/free shipping. Costco would have to sell it for under $35 + tax to beat that price. If they carry it, I don't think they'll price it below $40 ($39.95)

The same will probably go for Warner's upcoming Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection which with the STL discount sells for only $62.95 shipped, thus Costco's price will have to be under $58 + tax. Considering it retails for $100 and includes 10 DVDs, I'll be very surprised if Costco will price it below $70 ($69.95).

Best Buy has the worst dvd prices nowadays. Check this box set for example. 50 bucks at Best Buy...

    How much at Wal-Mart?

    38!!

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...A50705%3A50711

And yes, it is in stores.

They are practically giving these movies away at that price. Roughly 18 bucks a piece separate...or all 5 for 38 bucks. A no brainer.

$38! That's just over £20, here in Britain! Which is the high street price of many bare bones titles from Paramount.

I got my Scorsese set for £28 from CD WOW.

I ordered mine at Amazon.ca. Good to see they are doing 'complimentary' DHL upgrades again, so I am almost sure to receive the set tomorrow without custom charges.

Got it for a mere CDN$ 58.91 (including shipping), or £24 and change.

    Thanks Herb.

BTW, is this a good blind buy? I've only seen Goodfellas.

Dome: I am in much the same position, having only seen the two most "recent" included films. After reading this thread, and checking around on the other films, I cancelled my GoodFellas preorder (that I only made yesterday) and luckily was still in time to replace it with the Collection instead. Looks like a VERY good blind buy to me, the MS Collection is very well priced, as lately this sort of collection seems to be. You get 5 films for roughly the price of 2, and, really, how bad can a Scorsese film be? A bad MS film is likely to be better than a "good" one by many others, and for that matter, what *is* a bad Scorsese film?

    Yes, thanks Herb!!

I just finished watching After Hours. I forgot the movie was in mono. I turned the Denon up to hear the first few notes of Mozart when the movie started only to have it come out of the center channel only. Bleh. What's funny is that they seem to spend so much time on the audio effects in this film, I was really hoping that the audio would be "opened up" a bit more.

But the video looks very good. A bit soft in some places, but still very good.

One other thing - there's a LOT of hiss in After Hours. It really could have used a cleanup.

I have a lengthy review of the Mean Streets disc up at Cinema Gotham if you wanna read more about that one. I suspect a lot of Goodfellas fans are trying to decide whether to get just that or the whole set. This might help you decide.

Thanks. I may just order from DDD. I was thinking of the difference between 20+ bucks and 40+ bucks. It's about twenty bucks.....money I probably would've spent at a bar or something. Yeah, I think I'll make this investment. [IMG]

Watched half of the Goodfellas SE last night. It was worth the wait.
