DVD Review HTF REVIEW: Friday the 13th: From Crystal Lake to Manhattan (1 Viewer)

Student Bodies was well before its time too, except that movie sucks. I guess in that respect it was predicting the insulting toilet humor of the Scary Movie films.

I have to admit part 7 has more cut scenes than I originally thought. Didn't know they had the Melissa extended death scene. Boy Paramount really needs to find the negatives for part 7. As for The Final Chapter they need to find the famous Mrs. Jarvis drowned in the bathtub scene, The nurse in the hospital extended death scene: Nurse Rhonda was originally held up and gutted, but it ended up being cut out so that it only showed her being stabbed,A scene after Rob finds his shotgun broken to pieces in which he sets up a motion sensor in the woods(I actually have that scene on DVD. An extra scene at the very beginning in the moving ambulance: the two paramedics converse, the female medic says "I could've had the night off" and the male responds "Well, this was an emergency, like every damn thing." We then cut to the ambulance arriving at the scene and being directed to Jason's body, which is all we see in the wide release.
I'm sure there are other lost scenes. Good Review!!

I am VERY, VERY interested in this too more the SW Trilogy but one question for Michael Elliott are the movies on double sided flip discs which it hate or are they on dual layer discs in which you can select each movie like part 1 & 2 on disc 1 ETC.

I pre-ordered this set from Amazon.com on Friday (Sept. 24th) and mailed a money order on Saturday (Sept. 25th). Previously, I owned all 8 individual discs, but I sold them to help pay for the box set, plus I didn't want duplicate copies. It would have been a waste of shelf space, especially considering the individual discs don't offer anything that isn't going to be in the box set. Anyway, my favorites of the series have always been parts 3, 4, and 6. Those are the ones I watch the most. Simply put, Jason looked his best in those films. Part 6 had the best starring leads with Thom Mathews (Tommy Jarvis) and Jennifer Cooke (Megan Garris). I'd say that Jennifer Cooke is the most beautiful woman in the series. As for "best Jason," it's hard for me to choose between Richard Brooker (part 3), Ted White (part 4), and C.J. Graham (part 6). All three of them did a great job. It's also interesting to note that part 6 is the only film to feature a working camp with children. I also really enjoy parts 1, 2, and 5 as well. Parts 1 and 2 have a definite creepiness factor to them that is missing in the later sequels and even though I much prefer the hockey mask, the white bag/sack whatever that Jason wore in part 2 was definitely creepy. I love the scenery and locations used in parts 1 and 2, especially the shots in the woods. Everything is so green, lush, and terrifying! Part 5 really does seem like a softcore porn flick with its heavy nudity, but hey, there's nothing wrong with that! Debisue Voorhees (the actress that played Tina in part 5) had some really nice and very big tits. Easily the best nude scene in the series. Other than the top-notch nudity, the only other area this film delivers is the laughs department because of how bad it is. Part 7 is a bit of a let-down for me. I've never been much of a fan of Kane Hodder as Jason. I think he's too big for the part. Jason was a lot scarier when he was tall, lean/slender, and fast. In the early films Jason always ran after his victims. In part 6, even though he didn't run, Jason did the fast walk which was very effective too. But Hodder's Jason is a big, bulky, slow-walking snore-bore. Part 8 I like even less than part 7. Still, all 8 of Paramount's Fridays are like pure gold when compared to New Line Cinema's Jason X. What an awful, stinking, pathetic-excuse-for-a-Friday the 13th film, piece of crap that is.

I've watched FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 in field sequential 3-D on my HDTV. You just have to turn off the progressive scan button on your DVD player, at least in my set up.

Not sure what "every 3-D clip is shown in the featurette" means. The entire film was shot in 3-D, not just the gimmick sequences.

I still can't understand why Paramount didn't include a 3-D version on the set, as an untold number of bootlegs of the old VHD 3-D videodisc are already out there. They could have stopped that for good, and be making extra sales and $$$ themselves. I guess this may be saved for the triple dip!

Still, since I don't have the original DVDs (except for the uncut R3 version of the original) I'll be picking up the set anyway. I sure won't be watching Part 3 flat though, I'll pull out the VHD disc when it is time for that one.

Here's another nit-picky question- the end credits of Part VII were redone on the VHS- they're obviously done on video rather than film, and scroll at 30 frames per second. Does the DVD set restore the original end credits?

Colin answered this but here's something else. If you are watching the first film, at the last chapter you can push "next chapter" on your remote and it will take you to the start of the next film.


Another interesting thing is that the director of 8 claims he originally wrote a screenplay with Freddy meeting Jason but New Line and Paramount couldn't come to an agreement so he had to rewrite it. He didn't know what else to do so he sent Jason to Manhattan. The storyboards are pretty cool because we get to see what the movie was supposed to be before the producer took away all the money.

Part 5 does seem like a porn film and it might have been one originally. The way Feldman makes it appear is that part 5 started off as it currently does but when Jason goes to kill him, Tommy wakes up from a dream but the real Jason eventually comes back. That was the plan but Feldman was simply too busy with THE GOONIES and Paramount didn't want to wait 6 months for him to finish that up.

Actually, he probably just has better things to do then talk about something he doesn't like. The reason I say this is because nearly every actor interviewed on this set says something about not wanting to be in a "horror" film. These same comments were made by actors back in the 1930's, 40's, 50's and so on. I guess to an actor they were being put in "bottom" films. We all know the Bogart quote from RETURN OF DR. X so I guess this thing has happened from the start of films.

Perhaps had Bacon not gone onto bigger things then he might feel differently. For most, this series is what they are known for and one of them went on to become a rather big star. I'd love to hear Bacon comment on the film but if he really feels too good then perhaps he should listen to one of his CDs and realize there is something lower than doing a F13 film.

I read a Netflix review of the first F13.

I love it when people write up fake reviews that have never seen the movie. The reviewer says he knew who the killer was half way through the movie???

Hmmm...

Wouldnt this be technically impossible considering the killer doesnt even show up for the first time until the end of the movie??? Back in 1980, it would be impossible to know who the killer was unless you heard it from somewhere.

I mean I dont mind bad reviews & all. But, at least be accurate or have at least appeared to view the material you are reviewing.

DeepDiscountDVD. Jason and his trademark chainsaw? Once again, it is obvious they never viewed this movie or any seeing as Jason has never once in history used a chainsaw. Closest he came was that weedwacker thing (whatever it was).

Here is from another review. I may be wrong but I dont remember Jason being the killer in Part 1? Maybe I was passed out when this happened.

Sort of like the Guy who reviewed Cheerleader Camp 2 staring Uma Thermon & Betsy Russell in his book. Betsy Russell has claimed she was never in it. She was never in it because the movie never even existed.

I dont mind bad reviews. But, these reviewers are getting paid for things they never watched & writing reviews for movies that never existed. It's kind of a joke. And I would say that about any reviewer or any genre who is doing such a thing.

It should be a stipulation in their contracts to only review movies seen.

Oh well. What can you do.

P.S. Another one of my favorite "faux" reviews is one for Halloween which I vividly remember for being so stupid.

"Serial Killer Doctor Loomis returns to his hometown of Hamptenfield, Kansas on Halloween to seek revenge for the murder of his sister 20 years ago"

Wow!!! This reviewer was way off. Unless I saw a different movie. Maybe in an alternate reality.

Sequel screenwriters are kinda damned if they do/damned if they don't. Tread the same ground too obviously and the fans get antsy; deviate too far from the established formula and then things just get silly.

I grew up devouring these movies, so obviously I'm looking forward to owning this set. Should Paramount decide to release yet another box-set some time down the road (and it looks like something I need to own) then I'll just eBay this set and invest that money towards the "ULTIMATE ultimate" set. I try not to worry about what wasn't included on a DVD and focus more on what was. But having said that, it seems bizarre that there's no commentary for half the movies on this set...particularly on the ORIGINAL film!

Still, no sweat. Looks like there's enough on this box-set to keep me entertained for quite a while.

Yes, this has gone on forever. Very few actors ever embraced their horror careers. Vincent Price and Boris Karloff were two of the exceptions, I'd say.
