Comedian Bob Einstein first got his start as a writer and performer on the “Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” on CBS in 1967. But his most famous claim to fame is Super Dave Osborne, a character he originated on John Byner’s comedy skit series for Canadian television “Bizarre,” which also aired on Showtime in the early 1980s. This led to his own comedy series, “Super Dave” in 1988, and the feature film “The Extreme Adventures of Super Dave” in 2000.

This 140 minute DVD is a compilation of stunt segments produced for the “Super Dave” television series. Each stunt has a similar premise, a long setup for the stunt, followed by the execution of the stunt, which fails in some way, leaving Super Dave critically injured. Unfortunately, the premise gets old rather quickly, and for me, 140 minutes is a bit much. Thankfully, the disc has been divided into 25 minute episodes, and the viewer has the option of watching each episode individually, or all segments at once. Each episode is introduced by Bob Einstein as Super Dave with over the top enthusiasm about how great this DVD is, something I could have done without.

Video: 2.5 out of 5
“Super Dave” was a relatively low budget television series, shot on 1980s-era standard definition videotape, and this DVD shows the age of this material. Colors are over-saturated to the level of minor bleeding, with excessive noise. This is probably as good as this material is ever going to look.

Audio: 2 out of 5
Two soundtracks are provided on this disc, both in English and encoded in Dolby 2.0 at 192 kbps. One soundtrack has Super Dave screaming expletives as the stunts go wrong, the second soundtrack has been censored. The quality of both are identical, sounding a bit flat with a compressed frequency range.

Special Features: 0 out of 5
There are no special features provided on this DVD release.

Overall: 2 out of 5 (not an average)
Basically a series of one-joke comedy skits, teenage boys and die-hard fans are the likely audience for this DVD.
