Is it much better than the PS2? Does it support progressive scan and DTS tracks? I'm just wondering if it's serviceable to use until I get a blu ray player in a few months.

The xbox does support dolby digital and DTS. While it will display anything from 480p to 1080i for certain video games, its video output for dvd's is strictly 480i.

The link provided by Brad should provide you with all the info you need to make an educated decision. Players are so inexpensive now a days, I would suggest a dedicated DVD player.

Current models of the PS2 support 480p and DTS. It is an acceptable DVD player, not a good one.
