Ford forced Mazda into using the cellophane Taurus auto trans on the 626 back in the mid90s or so, hence the fly in the ointment.

I think my mom had one of those plain old Mazda 626s back in the 90s and I do remember it having tranny problems... Hmm Go figure! It was really a plane old boring sedan though, wasn't sad when it was sold.

That mid-late 90s 626 was a low point for Mazda. Their current Mazda 6 and Mazda 3 cars are amazing drives, the "poor man's BMW".
