HDMI to VGA adaptor problems (1 Viewer)

Hi all. I have a Hitachi projector, probably about 8 years old, with the VGA input all set up. I've been watching videos from my Mac laptop for years, with a thunderbolt to VGA adapter. I want to run a HDMI to VGA adaptor from my cable box into the projector. Bought one, made by Vivanco. Hooked it up, chose "computer" from the input menu on the Hitachi (back in the day, all computers were VGA...) but all I get is a red screen.

Tried lowering the resolution on the cable box to 720 but didn't help.

Ran a mini USB cable into the adapter to give it extra juice, but nothin.'

Anyone have any ideas?
