I had them about 13 years ago, when I was around 30. I don't really recall much about it, but I do remember having a small patch of pox-like blisters in the middle of my back. Mostly it didn't bother me but every once in a while it felt like someone just stabbed me with a pin. When a streak of blisters appeared around my torso I went to see a doctor. He said I was pretty much past the contagious stage but since that was the last day of my work week I took it off to give me three extra days. I don't even recall what medicine I took. I still have a dead patch in the center of my back where it was.

Your wife should be fine, I would think. I'm not exactly sure how long it takes for an infection to present itself, tho. Perhaps wipe down the shared spaces with the coworker with disinfectant wipes to be safe. And be aware of itchy spots appearing with tiny blisters.

I had an outbreak once back in the early 90s while I was in the Navy. At first I thought it was some sort of insect bites because I first noticed it when staying at my cousin's farm house. It then got worse I went to medical and the medic knew exactly what it was. He sent me to Bethesda Naval hospital where the doctor gave me a couple of drugs, including codeine to deal with the pain. I was sent home, popped a few and woke up the next morning and it started to clear up. I've not had an outbreak since an I hope never to go through that kind of pain again.
