Great thread...:)

No particular order here but these are my favorites. Unfortunately, I usually can't squeeze them all in every Christmas Holiday but these are must haves in the Glover home.

1. It's A Wonderful Life
2. The Bishop's Wife
3. Miracle On 34th Street (1947)
4. The Santa Clause (Tim Allen)
5. Christmas Vacation
6. The Bell's Of St. Mary's
7. Holiday Inn
8. Home Alone
9. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (animated classic)
10. Charlie Brown Christmas

So far this year I've only had the chance to see Xmas Vacation! Got to get more of these in!

Good thread Josh.

I'll go with 6 since it's a nice Christmas number.

6. Tim Burton's "A Nightmare Before Christmas"
5. Rankin/Bass Christmas Specials (All of them)
4. It's a Wonderful Life
3. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
2. The Shop Around the Corner
1. A Christmas Story

Considering that I'm a classic buff, I still have never seen "The Bishop's Wife", "White Christmas", "The Bells of St. Marys", or "Holiday Inn". I've got to get crackin'

1. A Charlie Brown Christmas
2. The Polar Express
3. A Christmas Story
4. NL's Christmas Vacation
5. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

BTW--I just saw "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" last night (the 1970 Rankin/Bass TV special) and I was blown away...it was very good and very moving!

I have also heard that broadcasts of A Charlie Brown Christmas have been edited over the years to make time for more commercials. If true, it's a very dark irony considering what the special is about.

That may have once been true, but not any more. They've expanded the broadcast to a full hour, with some new material (that I don't bother to watch) that follows the original program. This allows them to put in more commercials and still keep the original program intact.

Great list.

There is one that I always loved as a kid and if I were to see it now I'd probably be time-warped back to the late 70's watching it with my sisters next to the fireplace.

I think it is called "The town that Santa forgot" or something like that. The main characters are these mice living in a clock shop and one of them sends a note to Santa that offended him and he decides to blow off their town.
It was always my favorite as a kid and I think there was actually a quick spoof of it in a South Park episode where Santa is captured by the Iraqis or something like that.

How did I forget the Polar Express....

I saw it last year on IMAX (3D) and I was blown away. Add it to my original list.

Last weekend I saw It's a Wonderful Life for the first time on my 40th birthday. An amazing film! I'll buy it for next year.

My fav Christmas or wintery movies:

1. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Santa conquers the Martians. Actually, we like the non-MST3K version too.
2. Rankin/Bass (everything)
3. Charlie Brown
4. Rich Little's A Christmas Carol (on DVD now! visit www.richlittle.com)
5. Emmit Otter's Jug band Christmas
6. Miracle on 34th Street
7. Home Alone/Home Alone 2
8. A Christmas Story (when the dogs come and take what they want :D )
9. Christmas Vacation (bashing thru the "TREES ==>" sign :D )
10. Grinch-animated (can't stand that Ron Howard/Jim Carrey monstrosity)
11. Oliver! (yep, the musical)
12. It's a Wonderful Life
13. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Jack Frost & (Mexican) Santa.
14. Scrooged
15. Trading Places

I'll probably have to come back and update my list with ones I forgot.

I've heard a lot of good things about A Muppet Christmas Carol. I plan to pick that one up by next Christmas.

I didn't really like Polar Express. If I was 28 years younger I'm sure I'd be different. I'm just not a fan of cgi animation in general. I failed to find magic in it. :frowning:

I disliked Elf too. Speaking of no Christmas magic. The Rankin/Bass homages were nice.

That's my annual fave. I just watched it last week. I also enjoy, in no particular order:

--Rankin/Bass specials (fave is "The Year Without a Santa Claus")
--A Christmas Carol (Patrick Stewart & George C Scott)
--Christmas Vacation
--Santa Clause (& Part 2)
--Gremlins
--How the Grinch....(animated, though the Carrey film is OK too)
--Charlie Brown (though I like the later specials better than the original "CB Christmas")
--A Christmas Story

I've spent my life avoiding "It's a Wonderful Life" for many of the reasons previously mentioned. ;)

So have I. However, I've heard a lot of bad things about the dvd, and so have been reluctant to check it out.

I think it's better. I really didn't care for "Muppets Wizard of Oz." And it's pre-Pepe, so there's no prawn in "Christmas Carol" (possibly part of why I like it more, I'm not a fan of the prawn). ;)

Pepe! That's it. I couldn't remember. Anyway, I can see him getting annoying after a while. Maybe after "the new" wears off. Anything Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland would have to be toe-smashed-against-chair-leg painfully bad for me not to like it.

Oh, I forgot about these...

Monty Python's Life of Brian. D'oh!

Fat Albert's Christmas Special is pretty good.
