I found the thread and posted my revised list here . My selections, for the most part, are either universally accessible, or challenging but not impenetrable. In either case, I've been a cineaste for a long time, and these were the films that have stayed with the longest, or have renewed my faith in the power of cinema to transcend borders.

I'll chime in with a recommendation for Icelandic director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson's Cold Fever and Children of Nature. Both of these are quirky road flicks that take place in Iceland. They are very enjoyable and not too difficult for the foreign film neophyte. Unfortunately, neither film is available on dvd.

If you can find the VHS versions, give that dusty VCR something to do and watch these movies!
