As far as I remember, Scream 3 is available in Germany in DTS in German and English. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragen will be Available in DTS in German and English in November.
The German 'Crouching Tiger..'-Disc is one of the most awful looking discs I have seen in recent time. THe picture quality is absolutely horrible. Stay away at all costs! Scream 3 is ok, however.

The German version of Eyes Wide Shut is full screen. The transfer is every bit as good as the US version, and it is uncensored.

Bjoern,
I do not own the French Sleepy Hollow DVD (I have the German one), but according to dvdfr.com it is a single disc release, though it seems to contain all major extras. How they fit 2 DTS tracks, 2 DD5.1 tracks and extras onto a single disc is beyond me, but dvdfr.com gives the disc their highest ratings.
As for Les Rivières Pourpres: I'm afraid the release contains terrific DTS and Dolby Digital tracks in French, but that's all. There aren't even subtitles in French and it's not always easy to follow what's going on if you are not very good at French. (I only understood the film on second viewing, since I missed way too much dialogue the first time around.)
By the way: The German Scream 3 DVD is an easy recommendation: DTS and DD5.1 tracks in English and German, anamorphic 2.35:1 video and a host of bonus materials on the second disc. The picture is quite good, though not great. (It looks a tad too "digital" to me.)

Paul - Germany has Luc Besson's beautiful "Atlantis" complete with DD & DTS sound.
This film consists of a series of underwater sequences set to music by Eric Serra. There is no dialogue, but there is a German spoken prologue (which can be chapter-skipped before the underwater sequences start).
Especially recommended if you enjoyed "The Big Blue".
(Just one caveat - when playing the first chapter with the German prologue I sometimes get some half-second sound drop-outs on the DTS track. The drop-outs do not occur at the same points every time, and the problem is removed when I skip back to the beginning of the movie and scroll through the audio tracks with the remote's "Audio" button. I have tried two copies now and get the same problem on each one, but I have never had this problem with my Pioneer player and amp when playing any other DTS or DD disc. Very strange.)

Just out of interest, the "movie" disc of the German 2-Disc of Fifth Element has a feature very much like "Infinifilm" - with German text of course.
The problem as I see it is that the producers crammed this, plus two DTS soundtracks (English and German), plus two DD soundtracks, all onto the same disc. It's a wonder there was room left for any kind of picture at all! What were they thinking?

Florian,
thanks for the info. Its really discouraging to see that some of these fabulous french releases don't have at least english subtitles. The new 'Brotherhood of the Wolves' 3 disc set drives me crazy. Its one of my favorite films of recent times and they release this mega special edition without subtitles. I never watch dubbed versions, so i don't complain about alternative soundtracks, but subtitles? Sigh.
Christopher,
NON of the things that are wrong with the TFE SE picture wise have something to do with bitrate: EE, aliasing, too hot picture with clipping, wrong hue, etc... Non of this would have been any better even at max bitrate.
Regards

Bjoern,
I am none too happy about the missing subtitles myself, luckily I can manage (barely) to understand spoken French.
However, I don't quite understand your criticism of the video quality of the TFE SE. Well I understand that you criticise it

, because it really is not very good, but I disagree on the points of your criticisms. I thought the print that was used was in pretty good shape: clean, sharp and none of the aspects you mentioned seemed off. The only problem I noticed was a certain amount of grain. The main problem IMO really is the compression. It is quite clear from the get-go that they really have run out of space. Sometimes compression artifacts distract from the picture and quite simply negate all positive aspects the actual print has.
What really bugs me is the fact that it could easily have been better if they had dumped one or all the DTS tracks. For an example of what could have been possible take a look at the scenes in the opera on Floston Paradise. Gorgeous colors, sharp (without EE), using the PAL resolution to its full advantage... well, what a shame.
ciao

If it were me, I would be scouring the porno shops for the uncut Emmanuelle in America. Only 3,000 produced. Who knows if Anchor Bay truly has the sack to put this out.
But then you're probably not as interested in eurosleaze as I am.

Classics that are only available in Europe:
Rules Of The Game (La Regle Du Jeu)
The African Queen
While these are no super special editions, they both have interesting supplements. Renoir's masterpiece has a 42 minute analisis of the film, and Huston's classic features a commentary track by cinematographer Jack Cardiff.
I don't know if these titles are available in Germany - I got Rules Of The Game from France (with subtitles) and The African Queen from the U.K.

Mark,
The African Queen is available in both the UK and Germany but I would strongly suggest that anyone interested buys the British release. I do not own the German release and it does contain the original english soundtrack, but it was released by Eurovideo! Okay, that doesn't tell anyone who does not live in Germany anything, but suffice to say: I have yet to see a good DVD released by that company. (Though there are rumours that they have gotten one or two right... out of the hundreds they did.

Robert,
per definition this thread should be in the Regional DVD Area, but I hope it does not end up there, since it would die a very quick death. The Regional DVD Area seems to be a sort of "black hole" that sucks up all threads, never to be seen again.

~ thanx for the suggestion Robert, we'll take it into consideration.
Actually this thread is not really in particular about regional dvd's. It's about someone in this software region wanting to know what titles would be worth picking up in Germany[reg 2] that might have advantages over region 1 titles.
Additionaly I would like to thank all of the members in Germany and elsewhere for replying and providing us insight on your Dvd collections !

oh, and The African Queen is on special offer in HMV's sale at the moment - I think its either £7.99 or £9.99, pretty good. Some other good offers too (most of which I paid full price for when they came out)
