I thought this problem was fixed when Apple fixed the network daemon problem last year. But my new Apple TV suffers. It's now up to 257 naming increments.

Is there a fix?

I have three ATVs and I've never seen that happen, but I don't include "AppleTV" in any of the names. Maybe if you try that.

I can try that. I figured since it's a different name, I wouldn't have name collisions. But it's curious that the first AppleTV is no longer incrementing. It did prior to adding the new one.

Ours are named Living Room AppleTV and Bedroom AppleTV and they occasionally increment in number but it usually resets when I reboot my MacBook Pro.

This was a problem with OS X Yosemite, fixed when they dropped the new "discoveryd" for the old daemon. I thought this fixed the issue conclusively. But I now recall some internet discussion about AppleTV still running old networking software and continuing to have this problem. Another possible fix is to give them fixed IP addresses at my router. But I'm using an Airport Extreme, so I don't know if I can do that.

Dave - I copied this from an Apple Support Communities thread but have not tried it myself:

  1. In your Apple TV, go to the Settings >> About and write down the MAC address of your ATV
  2. Start up the AiPort Admin Utility
  3. Go to Network tab
  4. click + in the DHCP reservations
  5. Choose an IP you want for your ATV & Enter the MAC address
  6. From now on, this IP address will be reserved to the MAC address and only your ATV will be able to get it, no other device will.
  7. It is not a static IP in a true sense, but behaves just like one.
