blu ray is a compeltely differnt animal. fox has slowed down on the releases to get them right..

they had to delay a bunch of titles.

it will be released on bluray.

the new extra features will be for bluray only.

Well, the new Fly/Fly II two-pack is due out on Tuesday (8/7), but I recently got a sneak peak at it. It appears to be a repackaging of the previous DVDs from 2005 in a new slipcase (with new descriptions of the movies on the back). However, the Fox Collector's Edition numbers (20 and 21) are missing from the spines of the individual plastic cases. There's also no mention of specific special features on the slipcase (except for "special features are unrated and are not close-captioned").

Looks to me like these are 1-disc versions of the previous 2-disc sets, with slightly modified cover art (which also presumably omits the special features lists on the back of each).

I'm also wondering about the discs themselves. Presumably, they use the same menus and such as the 2005 versions, and also feature the audio commentaries (and deleted scenes, in the case of Fly II).

Thoughts? Anyone else know more?

If all of the above is true, it seems a bit pointless, since the 2000 Fly/Fly II double-feature disc is still easy to find (and at a lower price). But if this new release contains the 2005 commentary tracks and such, then that would be a selling point for new buyers.

Well, I was right--the Collector's Set is just a repackaging of the 2005 versions (without the bonus discs) in a new cheapie slipcase.

Also, the Fly Classic collection is now out, and it's very nice. There's an audio commentary with David/Al Hedison on the first film, and some other neat bonuses on the 4th disc.

Finally, Cronenberg's version of The Fly will be released on Blu-Ray October 9. It will have all the special features of the 2005 release, as well as some new ones that are exclusive to the Blu-Ray version (such as the trivia subtitle track). Very interesting.
