    Ma & Pa Kettle!! Yes!!

    Abbott & Costello!! Yes!!

This must mean that Francis the Talking Mule can't be far behind.

And all of the 50's SF movies.

    And the classic horrors.

Maybe they were waiting for the ownership change.

This is great news, that's for sure.

So is the great Anchor Bay Repo Man OOP now? It's a great disc; get it while you can. I wish Universal would release Walker, though...

It's somewhat odd that the A&C box will have Buck Privates but not Buck Privates Come Home, which was also licensed by Universal to Image (the discs are now OOP, of course). Oh well.

William Waits -- don't let them off easy, man, tell us what you really think. [IMG] I love all of the studios, I understand their desire to maximize profit ... but I just can't understand how MAR presentations, and even 4x3 letterboxed (versus 16x9), don't ultimately cut into profits. They must -- this is a format embraced for years by cineastes, who first and foremost demand fidelity. Now that it has gone mainstream (in a big way), it is carrying the mantra of the film lovers with it -- as David Boulet and others have mentioned, every disc that offers an OAR and a MAR presentation in the same package brings with it the potential of new converts to the OAR cause; if you're not buying a movie on DVD in the hopes of recreating, as truly as possible, your theatrical experience, why are you buying it at all? I have to think that while a crowd who doesn't care about aspect ratios may be quite large in the DVD community, the crowd that actually objects to OAR has to be comparatively small. OAR/MAR dual presentations, perhaps most justifiable over OAR-only on "family" titles, cater to the crowd who cares and also the crowd who doesn't, and ommit only the crowd who want everything from Ben-Hur to Frasier to fill their 4x3 screens, and actively resent any package that confuses that desire. It makes little sense to alienate the first line of customers (those who get into DVD and DVD buying because they love movies) in order to passify the potential confusion of those customers for whom movies are an afterthought, and the recreation of a theatrical experience unimportant. Most of them rent, anyway. [IMG]

I'm very disappointed that An American Tail and An American Tail 2: Fievel Goes West (featuring a wonderful vocal performance by James Stewart) won't be 16x9 formatted OAR. Universal also released Balto to DVD in open matte/P&S only, and that title was OAR on laser (I'm unsure about the ATs). I won't buy MAR (modified aspect ratio) releases, and by issuing these "fullscreen," Universal also deprives us of the resolution gains in 16x9 formatting. I give the studio great credit for finally issuing Babe not only in 16x9 widescreen, but with a commentary by writer/producer (and director of the sequel) George Miller. That's a great release. [IMG] I'm not as bothered by the forced trailers as some; there are forced trailers in a movie theatre, too. You can fast forward through them (or at least I can, with the jog wheel on my remote). 16x9 + commentary = praiseworthy.

But now, after failing to offer Balto in a definitive form, the two theatrical ATs are looking as if they'll be short-shrifted as well. That's a shame. I'd have purchased both in 16x9, even without supplements, but certainly will not buy them, or anything else, "modified to fit 4x3 screens."

I enjoy Universal's product, and they were a tremendous force early in the format (their SEs, while steeply priced, set a standard in their day, and their Ultimate Edition offerings today continue to impress). Their recent double and triple-feature discs have also set a wonderful standard, this time for price-friendly, quality classic presentations on disc. I'm very vocal in my praise of what Universal has done, and continues to do, right, and in some cases continues to do better than just about any other studio. [IMG] But if we haven't established that every theatrical film deserves an OAR release, and a 16x9 formatted one (for all films that are intended for wide presentation; the pixel count says that 16x9 formatting benefits anything wider than 1.5:1 or so, if I recall, but in practical film terms that means all movies 1.66:1 and wider) to properly use the potential of the format ... well, we have established that, and the first point (OAR) was actually established by Criterion by the late 80's/early 90's.

I hope Universal revisits these fine films in the future.

[IMG] When I first saw the the American Tail films on that list (the first 2, at least) I was ecstatic. Then I read later in the thread that they're MARred. Not only did Universal lose 2 sales on those, but they're also losing a third. I was going to buy the new Animal House disc at CC tomorrow morning for $11.99 on sale. Not now. I have the CE and am happy with it, but was gonna bite on that price, but now I'll just stick with my CE. I'm not gonna double-dip if Universal's pulling this crap.
