For all the hype 720p receives it will be useless to most viewers as very few monitors natively support it. It might be accepted but upconverted to 1080i and therefore will be at the mercy of the set's internal scaler.

Wow, I didn't know NBA2K3 is 720p capable.
I'm picking up my NBA2K3 tomorrow and taking delivery on a Sony KP-57WV700 HDTV on Saturday. I'll be in Hi-Rez gaming heaven :)

Well, 720p, 1080i and 1080p are all HDTV resolutions. But in order to qualify as an HDTV-ready the set must be able to display one of these resolutions natively. To be an actual HDTV, it must also include an over-the-air ATSC tuner using 8VSB.

Some of the newer sets are taking a 720p input and upconverting to 1080i (and the only time this feature seems really useful is for the Xbox, strangely enough...)

In the future I'm quite sure we'll see the more expensive HD sets display both 720p and 1080p (and de-interlacing 1080i.) Sets that take/display both native 720p and 1080i should be even sooner. But it hasn't reached a point where they need that is a differentiating factor, but the fact that they're upconverting on some sets now certainly points in that direction.
