She's good as a character actress (the second banana part in VERTIGO), but I could never understand the postwar effort to make a leading lady out of her. (She was probably much better on the stage.) I think my big problem with Max Ophuls' CAUGHT (1949) was my failure to see why a rich and powerful man like Robert Ryan's character, supposedly based on Howard Hughes, would go through all that trouble for a mousy little thing like her. I mean, look at the women Hughes did go to all that trouble for! Quite a solid lineup, to say the least.
I agree completely.

One of the reasons she's so effective in Vertigo is precisely because she's not glamorous and sexy. She makes it clear to the audience why the James Stewart character is indifferent to her but knocked off his feet by Kim Novak's character. (I really identify with James Stewart in that respect! :))

Bel Geddes was the original Maggie the Cat in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway. She must have had something! Or did her "mousiness" help explain her husband's attachment to his late male friend, and subsequent sexual neglect of Maggie? Questions to ponder on a sidebar to this thread.

Methinks there is(er, was) dirt. Maybe a moped?(Certain connoisseurs of a particular comic get it...)

I actually tried to compile a similar list like this several months ago, but I didn't get very far. Too much work and not enough time. I used Leonard Maltin's 2010 Movie Guide as a reference for movies that have never been released on DVD(Region 1) and though it's out of date I double checked online and updated as best as I could. My god, if you want to list the movies only available on VHS, we'll be here all day. Hundreds and hundreds of grindhouse movies and slasher flicks and porn alone that never made the digital transition. Great White, The Boogens, Ninja Kill, Mako: The Jaws of Death - I could go on forever.

Also, are we talking just released domestcily? I can think of a couple you have listed. I know that at least Megaforce has been released in R2. I picked up a copy a few years ago.

What about the made-for-TV films, especially the ones produced and/or distributed by Universal Television, who has a track record of not releasing made-for-TV films on DVD, and therefore are only on VHS.

I can add "Diary of a Mad Housewife" (Frank Perry, 1970) not available on legitimate DVD

I have a question for ya all guys: Even some PolyGram films of the 1990's have never made it on to DVD or Blu-ray, A Pig's Tale and Panther are two titles that comes to mind.Even if these two titles be released to DVD at last, who's going to distribute and own the rights to said titles? Metro Goldwyn Mayer? Uni? or a small studio (e.g. Shout!, Anchor Bay, etc.)

Welcome to HTF.

Some of those titles you listed have been released on disc; on DVD, on DVD-R, on European DVDs and on BRD.

There are a number of films fitting this category: Universal owned Paramounts (especially Alan Ladd films), some Selznick productions (e.g., Topaze), John Wayne's roadshow verson of the Alamo, other long films like Waterloo and 55 Days at Peking (not counting foreign releases), and Roy Rogers Republic films. There are also a lot of television programs like the Addams Family special from the late 1970s, various Classic Media owned Rankin Bass productions (such as Mouse on the Mayflower), various other children's and holiday specials (e.g., the rest of the Timeless Tales from Hallmark, some of the Saturday Morning Superstar Movies), and a whole host of Walt Disney productions. Anyway, that's most of what falls into this category that interests me.

I'm sure Beau Brummell had a Warner Archive release. Desiree is on a Twilight Time BRD. I'm one of the few who bought it.

I saw Shamus on a VHS which I borrowed. I've never found it on DVD. I'd buy a legitimate DVD without hesitation.

Then there's The Fourth Protocol (Michael Caine, Pierce Brosnan, Joanna Cassidy, Ian Richardson, Ned Beatty) that's only been on VHS here, though you can get a Portugese issue DVD if you look hard. You'd think with that cast someone would have picked it up for at least DVD, if not Blu, by now. It's also crackerjack spy flick. It belongs to whoever has Lorimar's films. Among TV films, City in Fear (David Janssen, Robert Vaughn, Mickey Roarke, William Daniels, Perry King) that came out only in EP mode on Avid. Lord knows who has that.

Still waiting, most likely in vain, for The Keep. I'll take it in DVD or Bluray, I'm not THAT picky.

Still waiting for Split Image (1982). I haven't seen it since it ran on HBO (I think) in the '80s. Out of print in VHS, never released on DVD.
