Who is the female singer you think has the best voice? Note that this doesn't have to be your favorite singer, but the one you think has the most beautiful voice you've ever heard.
For me, it would be Karen Carpenter from The Carpenters. I am listening to some of their songs right now and although I've always known she had a beautiful voice, I just realized how big of a chord she strikes with me. Plus, their songs are pretty dark (most of the time-- just listen to Rainy Days and Mondays or Superstar and don't be fooled by Top of the World or We've Only Just Begun) if you really listen to the lyrics. Brilliant stuff, the world lost one extremely talented woman when she died. :frowning:
So what female singer do YOU think has the most beautiful voice? :)

Definitely agree with Karen Carpenter, and would add Dionne Warwick. It takes a talented vocalist to handle those complex Bacharach melodies.

Man, it's impossible to narrow it down really, there are so many great voices. Martha Wash has always been my most favorite female voice. From belting out huge club anthems to the quiet, etheral beauty of a ballad, she has such a range of power and control that has always amazed me and can still send chills down my spine even from a song I've listened to 100 times before.

Other great female voices I just love:

Heather Small

Tina Cousins

Loreena McKennitt

Sarah McLachlan

Patty Loveless

Trisha Yearwood

Taylor Dayne

Paris Gray

Mary Griffin

Hannah Jones

While there are many, many women whose voices I love, the women who have the most beautiful voices I've ever heard are Alison Krauss, Norah Jones, Tori Amos, Sarah Vaughn, and Dinah Washington.

Man, I like a bunch of them. Several already listed.

Fiona Apple - I keep an online archive of her bootlegs and promos. New album out in Feb.

Kelly Willis - She freaks me out to see her perform live. Dallas Dec. 5th, Hell Yea! Several other dates in the next couple of months - I highly recommend seeing her.

Dido - I just bought the new disc and I dig it. Showcases her voice very well I think and she's got some voice.

Shelby Lynne - I love that southern drawl.

Sarah Mclachlan

Sheryl Crow

Jewel

Michelle Branch

Faith Hill

Norah Jones

Andrea Corr

Natalie Merchant

Ok, I'll stop.....

Sam, I sent you a PM. It's all concert (non commercial)stuff - hopefully I'll be spared the wrath....it's totally meant to be in her support. Her album has been delayed a few times so I decided to make a simple web page for some of her fans to tide them over 'till the new stuff gets here.

nina simone ... she can literally bring tears to my eyes. very soulful, melancholy, and just plain moving. if you've never heard her stuff, i absolutely recommend you give it a try.
lisa gerrard ... probably most well known from her association with dead can dance. although i can't listen for extended periods, when i'm in the mood she nails it jut right.
sade ... not much to say about her that probably hasn't already been said.
i will second dinah washington and johnette napolitano - both great voices.
