Van Damme got his start in martial arts films. He was in Bloodsport. It's the only movie that I actually like him in.

That was my point. Van-Damme is known for his martial arts on film so you don't have a classic showdown with a brawler. You get another actor known for their martial arts skill on film. You know "Statham is the greatest martial arts fighter on film and would kick Van-Damme's ass" type of thing.

I agree that some of the match-ups should have been better. I think in the first one you had a chance of a boxing "rematch" between Sly and Dolph but instead we get Sly shooting him.

Also The Expendables is the first movie I have seen with Dolph Lundgren where they actually show just how big he is. Every other movie seems to shrink him down quite a bit.

Oops. I misunderstood your original post. You meant Stallone shouldn't have been matched up against Van Damme. Don't know what I was thinking there.

I think Timecop is Van-Damme's best film.

I really didn't care for TIMECOP. I've never watched the whole thing. I really thought he was best in BLOODSPORT. The rest of his stuff doesn't really do anything for me, except show up his deficiencies as an actor.

This will be cool. My hope is: A bit less humor and more darker/serious tones and this could be the best one yet. Don't get me wrong since I laughed my ass off in E2, but taking that same route again might be a bit boring.

The ratings are out and it's confirmed, a PG-13 rating, so much for getting back to old school eighties flicks, they caved in, it'll probably end up being an entertaining few hours but i look forward to the extended R rated blu ray cut.

The PG-13 rating was not a big deal. No blood spatter, but it's really not the end of the world.

Wesley Snipes = YES, more please. Blade 4 too.
Harrison Ford = YES, see you in Episode 7.

Like Arnold better in this. A few funny lines. Bandares, meh. A little to quirky and improvisational, but an interesting addition to the mix.

i thought this one had a little more heart to it, despite the terribly written dialogue. Sly, we love you man. We seriously do. But if you continue to make more of these please let someone else write the script. Also, hire good line delivery coach please. Gotta let those lines breathe, instead of just spitting them out because it's your turn to talk.

WHAT IS WITH THE TERRIBLE CGI? Towards the end of the film, I became more tolerant of it, but only because I imagined I was watching the most realistic video game cut scene ever.

The cinematography was miles better than Expendables 2. That film looked like it was shot on Super 8 video. This one looked way more film-like and professional. Liked the few bits of slow-motion sequences, especially considering how rushed most of the edits are.

Kellan Lutz surprised me in this movie. Was expecting way worse.

The finale was a fun action scene, but the Gibson/Stallone boss battle was anti-climactic, just like JCVD in Expendables 2.

But you know, I can't stand the score to these films.

For story, I would rank the three films in this order...

All of them make for great home theater sound demos.

I was thinking a little bit about the casting and why this movie has flopped at the cinema, i am of the opinion that the storyline could have been changed, not radically changed but, just adapt what they have and change the baddies about, instead of Mel Gibson being the bad guy they should have made him one of the good guys, he is the original founder of the expendables, so let's have him being rescued from the train and make Wesley the bad guy, to me that would work better.

They should also have waited a year, they rushed this one into production too soon, they should have taken their time with the script, fine tuned it and got the dialogue better, i do believe the PG-13 also hurt this film, people had expectations based on the previous two films and each actors history in violent R rated flicks, i think R rated is what people expect from this type of film.

I think it had strong competition at the box office, they might have been better waiting until early September to release it.

it will be interesting to see if it makes its money back. I can't see how they can justify a fourth one if they can't recoup and legitimately make a better film.

But yeah, competing against GOTG, Ninja Turtles and Sin City? Rough.

I don't know why it didn't do well. Maybe the audience for these films is just a bunch of old farts like me. But, damn, I enjoyed it. I thought it delivered the goods:

[*]Action icons galore: Rambo, Mad Max, the Terminator, Indiana Jones, Blade, the Transporter, Zorro, Wong Fei Hung and the Punisher all in one film--who could ask for more?
[*]Formidable villain in Gibson
[*]Four up-and-coming young players who clearly know what they're doing and make a very interesting contrast with the old-timers
[*]A train-and-copter pre-credits action scene
[*]Globe-trotting plot climaxing in a massive abandoned hotel and casino on location in, presumably, Bulgaria
[*]Spectacular action finale

There was more, but all that kept my interest throughout, despite having to go to the bathroom.

One thought I had while watching it that I think would have traction on this forum is that it reminded me of IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD--and I consider that a good thing.

Note the acting strengths of Gibson and Ford vs. Stallone and Schwarzenegger and the obvious reason why the former are way more effective than the latter. Also note the way the younger actors behave around each other vs. the way the older crew does. Clearly a difference in generational styles and I'm guessing it came through naturally without anyone having to be directed that way. Things like that mean something to me and we don't get many movies these days where you can notice that. (Think back to all those westerns of the early '70s where you had a younger generation working with or against an older crew of veteran character actors, e.g. BIG JAKE, CHISUM and PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID.)

I did have a good time watching this live action cartoon film. Also enjoyed some of the inside jokes of dialogue. There were only two other people in my showing of it.

^ There was a good number of people when I saw it on the opening weekend and I enjoyed it but the rest of the crowd seemed dead. I'm not even a huge fan of these movies or many of the actors in it (though I've certainly got a soft spot for Arnie) but I felt like standing up and shouting "What movie did you guys come to see? Have some fun!"
