I had the day off from work yesterday and felt like going to see a movie. The wife was at work, so I had to pick a film I knew she would not be interested in. In that respect, I nailed my selection.

"Evil Dead" is not for the faint-hearted. I knew it was going to be a rough/gory film, but ugh...it was worse than I expected.
The opening scene was probably my favorite in the whole movie. It setup something far more interesting that the rest of the movie. Had they stuck with that story-line I think the film would have been a lot more interesting than what we got. I realize that they are staying with the basic formula of the original (which I have seen many times in my youth), but I never really felt the creepy sensation of something truly evil as opposed to just truly gross.

When I think of the sense of evil that one gets from watching "The Exorcist", that is really lacking from this film (other than the opening bit). It just boils down to one gross bit after another with an ending that...without spoilers...is just silly and right out of the eighties, catch phrase and all.

I cant recommend anyone go see it unless you are really into the gore. Effects are very impressive. Almost zero CGI and some stellar work with practical effects.

Hard to rate this one...but in the end, I would give it 2.5 out of 5.

It wasn't the second coming like some of the recent buzz seemed to indicate but I dug it. It has to be the most violent R rated movie I've ever seen. I went yesterday morning and kinda wish I had gone at night to see it with a crowd just to see a large group's reaction to some of it. There was a couple walkouts out of the maybe dozen people when I saw it so I have to imagine that there will be alot of people shocked by how graphic the movie gets.

EDIT: I meant to say that it "wasn't the second coming" but I left off the n't. I doubt anyone rushed out to see it based on that typo though. :)

They had to cut some of the gory bits to get the R rating, apparently there will be an unrated blu ray edition, i love the original and wanted an Evil Dead 4, i'll probably enjoy this one if they got the atmosphere right.

My understanding is that the gore cut was just a few frames. Either way, I'm certain that an unrated version will make it's way out.

Personally, I'm glad to see a big studio horror film that is willing to actually horrify the audience. I think we've been lacking that lately.

Hard to believe Raimi had to make cuts to Army of Darkness to avoid an NC-17 in 1993, given what's allowed within the R rating of the new ED movie.

It was just so gross and gory, I don't really know how I feel about it. But Jane Levy got hotter as more and more blood was splattered all over her and her clothing.I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C.

Just terrible. I found myself laughing where I shouldn't because it was preposterous. I'm reminded in watching it that maybe "Cabin In The Woods" was a far better take at this genre.

I didn't get the beginning; she was trying to kick drugs but the only thing she threw into the well seemed to be pot. Now, I am not a drug expert, but I've never heard of anyone kicking pot and going through convulsions, freak outs, etc. The implied that she was using other drugs just didn't seem to kick in anywhere.

The kid who read from the book was ridiculous.
Their decisions seemed laughable all the way.

I guess I just value "Army of Darkness" more than this, and didn't find it great horror and the comedy was wildly unintentional.

I thought it was some sort of powder she threw down the well.

I went to a 10:30am showing today and really enjoyed it. I've always felt that gore isn't scary but I thought it was generally effective here simply because of how brutal it was. It's strange but it didn't cross into the torture/porn genre but it was still quite graphic. Perhaps since we got mostly REAL effects and not just the fake CGI shit that it made them feel a lot stronger. I thought the atmosphere was terrific and I really give the writer, director and producers credit for trying to do something more than just a cheap cash-in. I really thought they did a very good job here, although calling this the most terrifying movie ever made was a bit of a stretch. I also thought the performances were good and something missing from most horror films today is that I liked and cared for all of the characters.

I'm not sure they went for any black humor as it felt like a 100% horror movie. This was somewhat ruined at the end as I didn't care for the twist at all.

    SPOILERS.....

When the sister came back to life was just way too much for me. I really thought this part was stupid, although what followed was still good. I also liked how the people you thought would die first didn't happen. Having both of the women die first was something original as the guys usually go out first.

    Michael-
I couldn't figure that out either; if the evil had already eaten her soul, then I didn't see how burying her brought her back.. I thought that was just another way to kill her.
The other problem with that was that once the heavens rained blood and the ultimate evil arose, it seemed silly to kill it with a chainsaw. At that point, I was totally baffled.
I was sure what she through into the well was a dime bag, but maybe I'm totally wrong.. *shrug* the people around me also thought the same thing, though.

I've got no problem with CG when it's done right but CG blood rarely if ever looks good so I was very happy to see alot of actual physical effects used in this movie. I'm guessing they were probably augmented with CG but whatever gets the most convincing illusion onscreen is what I'd prefer.

More griping about CG blood: The Walking Dead TV show has such great zombie makeup but as soon as they shoot a zombie, the blood looks like a video game and it undermines the wonderful makeup and the show itself.

Fire and blood are two things that are usually horrid when it comes to low-budget CGI. I really think it hurts horror films. I'm sorry but if you can't afford real blood then go to some other genre. I think a lot of younger horror fans will probably be seeing "real" effects for the first time so hopefully they'll dig it and then start to do some research into some of the older guys/films.

I've heard the remake of MANIAC has some really bad CG blood but I'm still dying to see it so much that I'll probably drive the 2-hrs to do so.

Off topic but the CARRIE trailer looked horrid and by God are they giving away TOOOOO much in trailers these days (same with THE CALL).

That trailer didn't do much for me either but I'm still interested in seeing the movie since Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz are really talented actors. Moretz is the right age to be playing Carrie (nothing against Spacek but she looks more like the age of a grad school student than a high school student in the original) and while I think of Margaret White as a more severe looking woman than Moore, hopefully she'll make it work.

I was going to say they are giving too many trailers (period). We had almost 15 minutes of trailers. Ridiculous.

One thing about this movie that had my scratching my head was...

Spoiler (how the heck do you add spoiler tags now?)

The nail gun. What kind of magical nail gun could fire off that many nails and not be hooked up to a compressor? I am no carpenter, but is there really such a tool that can do that?

For now, UBB code for spoiler still works:

    [ spoiler] SPOILER TEXT [ /spoiler]

(just remove the spaces between the "[ and s" and "[ and /")

Spoiler tags can be accessed through the Special BBCode button, third icon from the left in the reply box toolbar. Select Spoiler from the dropdown menu that comes up, enter the text you want masked, and click OK.

I THINK they are looking to move the feature into the toolbar instead of buried in the special menu.

I'll certainly be there opening day (or that following Monday :)) but it's just shocking to see how much of the plot they gave away in that trailer. Since I'm familiar with the book and the two previous versions, I already know what "happens" but I think some are going to view the trailer then go see the film and have everything ruined.

Moretz is one shining star out there so my hopes are still high but they didn't seem to make her look less attractive to fit the part. I think Carrie would be getting hit on more than the popular girls. :D

There are nail guns that use compressed air cartridges, don't need compressors.

Yes, I think he gets that.. it's just that those with cartridges generally won't fire like a hundred plus nails.. that thing kept firing away, for one that was small and handheld.
It's a minor nitpick, but I got it.. there are other things far more crazy

I work with a nail gun on a daily basis at my job, and it always annoys me when nail guns in movies fire off like AK-47s. In my experience the faster you try to shoot out nails the more often they jam.
