EUROPEAN FILM TOURNAMENT

Might as well finish off a World Cinema Trilogy

Theatrical Releases only

European films only (British films are excluded from this one)

Joint Euro/US productions do not qualify

I’ve started us out with 50 films but I think we can make 128 fairly easily.

Everyone has 2 Automatics, 12 nominations, seconds & thirds.

Keep in mind that obscure films that don’t get enough votes will get tossed so choose wisely.

I hope i understand this properly (i've picked 12 nominations/2nds)

Automatic;
Alice in the Cities
The Green Ray

Nominate;
Persona
Pierrot le Fou
Kings of the Road
Celine and Julie go Boating
Mirror
Spirit of the Beehive
Partie de Campagne
Eternity and a Day

Second;
Man with a Movie Camera

Alexander Nevsky

(i'd have liked to nominate/auto Abraham Valley by the great Portuguese Manoel de Oliveira- well in his 90's, as prolific as ever-, but i guess it's too obscure for support!).

Does The Colour of Pomegranates (Armenia) qualify?

I presume someone else will 2nd La Regle du Jeu, so i'll risk its absence to make space for other nominees.

John, I believe the movies in the master list are already in, they don't need backing. And I also think it's 12 of each.

I'll second:

M. Hulot’s Holiday
L’Atalante
Three Colors: White
The Red Desert
La Dolce Vita

And third:

Jules and Jim

John,

Welcome to the tourney.

As Simon pointed out it's 12 of each & the films on the Master List are already in so there's no need to second & third any of them.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being is not a European film so I'm tossing it.

2nd:
Vagabond
Dancer In The Dark

Since I automaticed Cobra Verde, and Steve automaticed Kasper Hauser, and there were already 2 Herzogs in there, does that mean that Brook's Stroszek automatic doesn't count?

It seems i completely goofed, and must have been blind to boot- all 12 of my nominations are in fact 2nds and 3rds or on the master list!! That takes some doing. Jim obviously has good taste. And i didn't even spot Alice in the Cities and The Green Ray (which i thought would miss out otherwise) on the Master List; great calls anyway!

If this means i'm allowed new nominations;

AUTO
The Colour of Pomegranates
Abraham Valley

NOMINATIONS
Orphée (don't think i missed it elsewhere)
Rosetta
Ulysses' Gaze
Claire's Knee
Senso
Hiroshima mon Amour
Madame de
Casque d'Or
Night of the Shooting Stars
The Gospel according to St Matthew
Madchen in Uniform
The Chess Player (neglected silent)

If i'm not allowed, or this complicates things- then ignore them!

I have to toss my nomination of Contempt, as it was made with American money. Also The Unbearable Lightness of Being, but Jim already tossed that. And if I get my Three Colors: White nom back, I have three left.

Nomination

Talk to Her
The Vanishing
Tree of the Wooden Clogs

Second:

That Obscure Object of Desire
Mon Oncle

Third:

Dancer in the Dark
Russian Ark

John,

I updated my first post with everyones auto's, noms, etc. Sorry if that threw you off.

You do have 4 Nominations left.
0 autos
& you still have 12 each of 2nd's & 3rd's as the ones you used were already in.

As for the 4 Director rule it looks like thats out the door as it's going to be too hard for me to police.

My intentions were for a more even playing field rather then having a lopsided Godard, Truffaut, Bergman, Fellini, Bunuel, film tournament. Looks like there's no way of stopping it though.
