Does anyone understand the ending of Kinji Fukasaki's Battle Royale? I recently ordered the DVD after watching it, and it's supposed to arrive today, which has got me thinking about the ending. I don't want to put a spoiler in, but basically I don't understand how everything is resolved after the time is up.

    Thanks.

    What's not to get?

The three kids get away on the boat at the end. They figured out a way to beat the system.

But maybe I'm not remembering something. I saw it about 9 months ago. Are you thinking of another aspect? I'll try to help.

Also, did you find a region 1 or 0 copy? I'd love to get one for myself.

I got a region 3 copy for about 17 dollars shipped. It works in my PC, but not my normal dvd player. I have a toshiba dvd-rom. Its so old it didnt have region protection, though I know u can get things to get around that anyway.

    On to the actual ending

I mean how did they figure out a way to escape. They never show how, and the way it is described at the beginning of the film the detectors on their neck would know if they are dead or not. So how could they fake their deaths. Also the loner that helps the couple, dies at the end though I never noticed how he received a wound. I was also a little disappointed with the ending without questioning the details. The whole movie is graphic, and then it ends with this happy story book ending. It would have been better if the guy really did just kill them when he said he was going to. I'll have a better idea of whats going on tonight after I watch it again.

I think I remember the loner guy figuring out a way to disarm the neck bombs. He wanted to save the couple because he had lost his girlfriend to the game, so he knew how it felt. But beyond that I did feel a little cheated by the ending. I thought the only true way to end it was for only one student to remain alive. I thought that really would have said something.

Beat Takeshi makes the observation that the guy had figured out how to disarm the neck bombs. They grabbed a boat from the dock and headed back to Japan. Noriko and Shuya are now fugitives, since they didn't kill everyone they're wanted for murder. The other guy got the wound fighting the insane guy with the big hair.

    During the film,

Some of the kids figured out how to disarm the computer systems. During this time, Kawada figures out how to fudge the neck collars. By fudging with the collars...he makes the computer system announce that the three are dead. By actuallity...the collars are dead.

They then hijack a boat and escape. Now wait...how did Kawada know what to do with the collars. Remember Kawada played the game before and he was not part of the original class. Even better the teacher knew who Kawada was and adding even more to the conspiracy, the teacher does not want the soldiers to examine the bodies. Meaning that the teacher probably knew that this was going to be one of the last "free" Battle Royales.

As for the final scene...its a message from director Beat Takeshi to the youths of Japan. Rather then fighting to the top of your class...go out and enjoy life every now and then. Stop worrying about being the best and just run...run free.

Thanks a lot for your input. I've got another question.

I think the reason that the 7th grade teacher goes out into the forest is to talk to the girl he likes, but it is never really resolved of why he loves her. If he does love her why does he put her in the battle with binoculars as her weapon. He does take the time to make that lavish painting of all the deaths with her in the center, but it never explains why he likes her, cept maybe because she makes good cookies.

I'm not sure if you're reading too much into it.

I think he just likes her. She is a 'good kid' and he's sorry to see her as part of the game. Also, don't forget that during the game his own daughter (wife?) rings up and tells him she never wants to see him again - calls him dogbreath or something.

He obviously wants to die (hence the waterpistol situation) so yeah he suspects they have survived and got round the collars.

I actually think it is his death that they are fugitives for. The kids maybe be used as scape goats but they shouldn't kill a teacher.

I personally thought the beginning and the end were good but the middle was pretty dull, all in all.
