I think the length of time you have had your gear is also an issue.
When I first bought my DVD player I did purchase a few movies for the picture and sound. I can't actually say that I have purchased a movie that I don't like because of the A/V but there are certainly movies where the story was a secondary consideration. U-571 is an example of this.
I don't think the reason for this is necessarily because I need to "show off". Since becoming a parent I don't have people over to our house nearly as often as I used to. However, there are still times when I just want to sit back on the couch after the kids are in bed, turn up the volume, turn down the lights, and bask in the eye/ear candy that surrounds me when I put on a movie like The Fifth Element.
Now that I have my demo material I certainly do not buy discs for that reason.
