I am toying with getting a ps3 with tax money this year, however, i have a concern. My tv is a tosh 57 h83 from a few years back. It has 1080i, i beleive. Will the ps3 correctly display on that and is 1080i almost as good as 1080p?. Also, the ps3 does not upscale sd dvd's correct/

The PS3 is capable of displaying 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. The PS3 presently does not upscale DVDs to 1080; however, it is rumoured that the capability will be added in a future firmware update. It also presently cannot upscale 720p game material for 1080i only native resolution sets. For those sets, the PS3 presently downscales 720p game material to 480p.

I am not an authority on the virtues of progressive versus interlaced images but I believe, for all intents and purposes, that there will be no measurable difference between 1080i and 1080p on a 57 inch HDTV. The differences, if any, would most likely become apparent only on large screens such as those used in front projection systems.

The PS3 uses a proprietary AV multi-connector in addition to the HDMI output. I'm pretty sure that I have read elsewhere on this forum that the PS2 component cable will work on the PS3. PS2 and PS3 are equipped with the same type of AV multi-connector. An HDMI to DVI adapter cable might be the way to go; however, I'm not sure what compatability issues might crop up, if any.

It will only work if your tv supports HDCP. Otherwise, the HDMI output is useless, and the only way to get HD content is via component cables.

And yeah, the PS3 uses a PS legacy connector, that is, all PS2 cables work flawlessly with the PS3.

The PS3 does 1080i (blu-ray) over component just fine. So just purchase the PS2/PS3 component cables and enjoy. Don't worry about the DVI connector.

I've tried both HDMI and component with 720p and 1080i and I couldn't tell the difference.
