I never ask, but I would tell someone if they asked. I could care less who knows what I make.

The one downside though to the majority of people keeping quiet on their salary is that it can be tough to find out what a base salary is when trying to break into an industry.

Boss - "So son, what type of pay were you expecting here?"

Applicant - "Well, I talked to about 1000 people in this field but no one would say what they make. So, uhhhh........ $100,00 per year sounds....... good."

Boss - "Hmmm, yes....... well call you....."

Kevin, I don't think you need to exactly ask what someone makes to figure out what the salary range is. Without telling you what I make, I can say things like:

-The average person can freelance for $20/hour.
-If you get a full time job with a small company, they'll probably start you off around $35k/year.
-If you're resume is great, you can probably ask for $50k as a start.
-If you're really lucky, you can even make up to $70k and $80k.
-I wouldn't expect more than $60k as a start.
-You're best to ask for $50 and let them talk you down.
