Do you get mad when someone asks how much $$ you make? (1 Viewer)

I don't, in fact I have no problem telling coworkers or friends how much I make but I seen some people get all huffy and upset over it.
Is it really a sensitive issue to most people? What I don't get is when someone bitches and moans that they don't make x amount per year but do nothing about it. If you need training or a degree go get it. Anyone can go to college in this country regardless of income via means of financial aid. They only think holding anyone back is themselves.

If someone makes more money than me than more power to them!

What does everyone else think?

And I think that your salary shouldn't be discussed. What good can it do? Why do you need to know what someone makes?

Money is the cause for much misery, I think that's why people avoid the question altogether.

I learned this the hard way at my first job when I told a co-worker what I made. The problem was that I made more than her and she had worked there longer, so she complained and I ended up getting my pay decreased to match hers (I was told that it's my fault for not keeping my stupid mouth shut, and they were right).

I mean, what good can come out of telling your co-workers what you make? What if the lazy guy you don't repsect makes as much or more than you do? It will only make you mad. What if everybody makes less than you? It might make you feel important, but how will they react when they learn this? It will only lead to contention.

It annoys me when someone asks how much I make. It's really none of their business. I was taught by my parents that it was rude to ask such a question.

It's not what you make- it's what you keep. And, I'm doing OK in that regard (well, not this month, but most of the others ) When someone asks me what I make, I say "enough- for now."

It is a funny hangup. People consider income questions rude, but will flaunt all manner of material possessions to beg the question be asked. I don't get it.

I'm sorry you lost the coin toss in that case of corporate mutual back-scratching. I didn't read the memo too closely since it had nothing to do with whether I was getting fired or not, so I don't remember what sector of the country's tech infrastruture LM is cornering in this aquisition. But welcome anyway. As for me, I'm on a NASA engineering support contract at JSC. Ask me about robots. G'head.

I once worked with a guy who had been working at the company longer than I had, but he SUCKED. He got pissed when he found out that I was making just as much as he was.

It made for a very uncomfortable workplace.

when i was managing a call-center, we accidently hired a gal at almost 30% more than the rest of the crew. her paperwork went through three pairs of hands and no one caught it. (i was out of town... )

this gal eventually accidently told anothe gal who got very upset. it took some serious dancing on management's part to explain it away.

personally, i *never* tell someone how much i make....and i never ask either.

i think when people you work with find out that you make more then they do, they get jealous. plain and simple. in their eyes their work is just as important as mine - so why should i make more? heck, i feel the same way if i find out someone makes more than me.

so when someone asks me, i very bluntly say it's not something i discuss. that usually gets my point across and they never ask again.

I don't get irritated, just curious why some stranger would actually care what I make. Most people that are close to me have a general idea and do not need an exact number.

No, wishful thinking. We do engineering assessments, performance analysis, troubleshooting, and flight support for the Shuttle robot arm, known as Canadarm by our uppity neighbors to the North. Lots of simulation, code wrangling, hardware testing, and telemetry monitoring. A real mixed bag of stuff.
