DIRECTOR FILMOGRAPHY - The Films of FRITZ LANG

Here’s a little change of pace from tourneys and if there’s enough interest I plan on doing for as many noted directors as I can think of. [IMG]

I’ll post one, every day or few days depending on my schedule.

Based on the feedback, I also figure this as a good way for me to prioritize my viewing. Rank ‘em, rate ‘em, review ‘em or whatever.

Haven't seen nearly as many as you, but I'll give it a go.

    *1. M - A (an all-time great top 25)
*2. The Testament of Dr. Mabuse - A (nearly as good as M!)
    3. Metropolis - A-
    4. The Big Heat - A-

    5. The Woman in the Window - B+
    6. Scarlet Street - B+

    7. Dr. Mabuse: Inferno, A Play of People of our Time - B
    8. Dr. Mabuse: The Great Gambler, A Picture of our Time - B
*9. Le Testament du Dr. Mabuse - B
    10.
The Weary Death - B (had to look this up as the DVD I saw is titled "Destiny". This is Lang's go at creating a Murnau/Weine type fantasy/expressionist film and has its moments and worthwhile imagery, but isn't in a class with Murnau's films or Caligari)
    11. Woman in the Moon - B-
    12
    . Spiders: Part I - The Golden Lake - B-
    13. Spiders: Part II - The Diamond Ship - B-
(again these have their moments but I found them a bit boring. Pretty simple action/adventure serial stuff that I couldn't really get into.)

Neat idea. I look forward to reading more.

I'm not the best one for Fritz Lang movies as I've only seen Metropolis. However, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse is on its way to me in the mail and M is up next in my queue. I'm very interested in hearing some opinions on his films.

I don't know what to say about the one I have seen (everyone else has probably seen it anyway), except that I find it brilliant and haunting. I'll leave it up to more knowledgeable film fans than me to discuss the abundant symbolism, the intricacies in the story, and the cutting-edge special effects, and just say that this is one of those movies that has had a prolonged effect on me, several scenes indelible.

Edit: Well, now that I've seen another film I can have a ranking list.

    Metropolis
    The Testament of Dr. Mabuse

Lang's The Testament of Dr. Mabuse [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG] is an absolutely spellbinding and riveting cinematic achievement. Wow, the film is 72 years old but it's story is fresh as today's news headlines. Is the Testament an allegory about Nazism and that Mabuse equals Hitler? I do wish have the time and watch it again with the DVD audio commentary on but I need to watch next (like now [IMG] ... for the 1st time) my other all-time favorite directors' "masterworks" (Kurosawa's Ikiru and Antonioni's L' Eclisse) so then I can mail them back right away to Netflix.

And oh, I would put the Testament of Dr. Mabuse up there - tie for 1st place with M.

I just saw The Testament of Dr. Mabuse this weekend. Indeed, a very good film. I look forward to seeing Dr. Mabuse: the Gambler and M next.
