Ranked (stars out of four): Lawrence of Arabia **** Doctor Zhivago **** Brief Encounter ***1/2 A Passage to India ***1/2 The Bridge on the River Kwai ***1/2 Ryan's Daughter *** Oliver Twist *** Great Expectations ***
Lawrence of Arabia is the film I judge all others by -- which is unfair, because nothing touches it.
Doctor Zhivago is one of the few films that have ever made me cry. It's kindof a cliche -- but then again, there are reasons for things becoming cliches. Zhivago is the definative screen tragedy in my book, but that's selling it short. A tragedy is a limited viewpoint and Zhivago, like Lawrence, is infinately expansive.
Brief Encounter - a dress-rehersal for Zhivago. And a great one.
Ryan's Daughter is highly underrated. It's not a great film, but it's deeply felt and very well photographed, showcasing a very mature and scathing re-appraisal of the optomism on display in Doctor Zhivago. It was very moving.
The Bridge on the River Kwai one of the first great, classic films I ever saw as a child; as an adult, I recalled it more critically, thinking it overrated. Every time I watch the film I think, "oh, this isn't so great". And then the climax of the film comes along and my mind gets blown all over again.
