would like to see Spellbound and Rope again [it's about time to unseal my Criterion Hitchcock Wrong Men & Notorious Women: Thrillers 1935-1946 box-set]. I probably did overrate Spellbound (very underrated around here) but I'm pretty sure Rope is my choice as one of Hitch's most underrated films.
And my choice for his most overrated movie is The Birds.
Probably time to rewatch it.

I've only seen:
The Birds (1963)
Psycho (1960)
North by Northwest (1959)
Vertigo (1958)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
To Catch a Thief (1955)
Rear Window (1954)
Dial M for Murder (1954)
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Notorious (1946)
Lifeboat (1944)
Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
Rebecca (1940)
I got The 39 Steps from Netflix today and also have some TV recordings of some of his films (though most of them have been misplaced :D).

I'm curious if anyone who's seen Under Capricorn doesn't agree that it's his worst film. I'd be surprised, but you never know around here.
I've seen almost all Hitchcock's and it is FAR from his worst film. In fact it's a very interesting and sensitive film with careful characterization which I liked a lot though it begins very slow.

Almost every film is remarkable in a certain way, JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK is the really terrible one, talky, slow, stagy, repetitive with stereotyped characters and bad acting. The nadir of his career, no doubt while his other much malogned stage adaptation THE SKIN GAME isn't without interest.

Like I said, you never know around here. I totally and completely disagree that there is anything even remotely redeeming about Under Capricorn, but I just knew that there had to be someone who'd disagree. :)

Jim,

Can I assume you saw Bon Voyage on TCM? If so, were you able to see the subtitles on the bottom of the screen?

Barely George. At times I could only make out the top 2/3rds of the letters. Made it a bit of a challenge but it was only 20+ odd minutes long.

That's what I thought. :frowning: I had started watching it a few months ago when TCM had it, and stopped because of the subtitle problem. I tivo'd this latest showing, and was hoping it had been fixed. I guess not, but I guess I'll just hold my nose and watch it.

I just saw The Lodger too on TCM (I assume thats where you saw it?).

I agree with your rating of 2 1/2 stars. Not bad, but certainly not great. Very interesting to see one of Hitchcock's silent films though.
