OK those of you who have jumped in on ATMOS, answer me this.

I have a 2015 model Denon 2200 AVR arriving tomorrow, I will pair it with a Vizio P50, a Samsung 8500 and an Xbox 1S arriving next week. I have a set of KEF 5.1 E305s currently, my intention is to move the current front left and right speaker to be sides in a 7.1 setup and/or turned off when doing 5.1.2 ATMOS. I have the Pioneer B22 Andrew Jones going in the front, and I can wire the upfiring speaker on that for bouncy atmos heights.

But I can't do both at once right? I have to choose 5.1.2 or 7.1? So if I go 5.1.2 I just remove the KEF fronts and wire up the heights. If I go 7.1 I add the KEFs as sides and don't wire up the heights.

And yes I know that in 5.1 the surrounds are supposed to be sides but, let's be honest, nobody does it that way and direct radiators sound best from the rear =)

That's right. It has 7 pre-amp channels, so 7.2.0 or 5.2.2 at most. Higher models have more pre-amp channels than amplifier channels allowing use of an outboard amp to add two more channels.
