I have a 1080P that worked great last year when I only had my Xbox 360 connected with HDMI, but I recently added an ATT&T Uverse receiver in addition. The issue is I only have one HDMI connection on the back of my TV, which means I had to go with a component/RCA audio connection for the receiver. I listen with my headphones and when I go to a channel without audio, I notice a discernible background noise I don't get when I am on the HDMI connection (I tested using the HDMI to make sure it was not the cable box itself). Other than RCA and PC audio in, my TV only has a digital optical output connection. Since I am not familiar with this connection type, can this be done to work both ways or would you recommend purchasing a quality HDMI splitter?

Output is only output. In your case you need a HDMI switch. Not a splitter.
