Tan,

please post your impressions here, when you get the disc.

BTW, is the video difference noticeble on all Alien films on the quadrilogy set or just Resurection?

And also, DVDscan seems to have taken a really good look at both Terminator discs (R1 & R2jpn) on a 120" screen and found significant video quality improvement, besides the DTS one. Now unless FOX jpn is recoding the transfers for their UE, this really wouldn't make any sense. The differences in Alien Resurection would possibly prove that, since they should feature the exact same quality as they are equal releases.

Tan,

What are you watching these on and what is your equipment?

But that's different. Because there is an "extra" on that disc (DTS) that's not on the R1 edition, the disc was mastered differently and therefore bits were distributed differently. Alien Resurrection could possibly be a good example of the differences between R1 and R2 Japan transfers but we need to make sure that the discs are exactly the same content-wise.

AlexABC and Craig

First of all, my equipments are

-Sony Direct view HDTV KD-34XBR2 the best and the most beautiful picture TV I ever bought,
-Preamp Meridian 568
-Amp Marantz 4 channel amp 275watts per channel
MM-9430 supplemented with 3 Marantz MA-700
200 watts monoblock for surround and sub.

Secondly, the Alien quadrilogy of Japan is worth every penny and to me much better than the US version. I cannot compare the Alien because I sold the US Alien but I did compare the Alien Resurrection of Japan and US side by side and the the US version has a yellowish color bleeding and the Japan DVD has a very accurate color of the film of all characters. Aliens(2) of course side by side Japan has much better picture and the DTS sound. Same as Alien 3 is the DVD that most impressed me because I haven't seen this move for like 5 years so when I watched again it was quite new and exciting. The Alien 3 picture of the Japan set look the best of all 4 Aliens with the best sound. The DTS of this movie sound very open and suck you in the movie.

Thirdly due to a big difference in release of the Japan and US version quality, and that's why I post a message to see if any1 has Die Hard 1 or 2 because I expect a difference.

Again...simply because there is a difference between Alien sets does not mean there will be a difference in Die Hard sets. THE JAPANESE ALIEN SETS DO NOT HAVE THE EXACT SAME MATERIAL ON EACH DISC AS THE R1 ALIEN. It's apples an oranges. The Die Hard movies have EXACTLY THE SAME CONTENT. You want to do your own comparison of those, then fine. But don't think that because the Alien set is better that Die Hard will be as well. It may very well be but I haven't seen proof that a Japanese version is better when it holds the exact same content as a R1 version.

Hello everybody,

I'm new here.
I'm used to read some of your posts and when i saw Tan Ng being "attacked" on japanese DVDs, i tought i had to help with my experience...
I'm from region 2, France, where you can also find a lot of DTS tracks on DVDs.
I'm use to buy a lot of DVDs in japan and also on region 3.
As for the japanese people, i think that they are very sensitive on "music and musicality" in general terms and so, try to provide their DVDs with a lot a fidelity regarding the soundtrack.
Don't forget that they invented the DVDs, so it seems natural to me that they do the better encoding in the world, don't you think ?
A good exemple is ALIENS japanese edition witch will give you a stunning DTS track, much more precise in rear channels and giving a more fuller sound with better bass and dynamics !
I had a chat recently with someone telling me that he heard a lot of differences comparing MASTER & COMMANDER DTS region 1 against region 3 (also a Fox). The result was that the region 3 was far better in terms of fidelity, transparency, with better bass and the region 1 was sounding more flappy and wasn't as much organized in the mix !
I had above the same results with LXG DTS and UNDERWORLD DTS region 3 who were so impressive in dynamics, clarity and providing with amazing presence on all channels.
I don't know if the DIE HARD movies is a good exemple for Tan Ng, because the region 1 seems quite satisfying for me, but i like the way he tries to find "the best" soundtracks, and i think he is right to try !

Don't forget Europe, FRANCE, UK, BELGIUM and some more countries have DTS to offer too, you just have to be PAL capable !
For exemple, we are the only ones on earth to have BAD BOYS 2 with a stunning english DTS track ! He's a real winner to me...
You may also find ALMOST FAMOUS director's cut in DTS, BILLY ELLIOT, CASINO or TRAFIC and so on (almost 400 titles) !
You may have a look at dvdzone2.com (press "genres" = dts and check the languages before to buy !!!) !
If you want some more infos, i can answer on specific titles because there are a lot more titles with DTS in france !
Hope to help...

I didn't say that you were japanese, i meant that japanese people (who produce the DVDs you're looking for) are trying to give their best on those products !
As for the "attack", i didn't mean like a war... just telling i'm here to let people know i'm thinking like you !

I'm still waiting for anyone who has identical R1/R2 Japan discs to discuss a difference in quality.

Why do these threads always degenerate into 'dts as the superior sound format to save the world' ?
Most of this is purely subjective and varies with every different 'mix'.
Don't forget that the 'bonus' of dts can come at the expense of ' video bits' and each disc only has a finite amount of space.

One japanese disc I did buy was 'Jurassic Park Superbit' which was not too difficult as the dts R1 disc was poorly mixed.

please do not start a DTS vs DD war again. As you have observed, we the majority all love DTS in this channel and that's why we modified our player to play these import DTS discs. If you do not believe DTS as superior then please do not discuss here because you are starting an unneccessary war again. Thanks

Tan,
I buy discs from Regions 1,2,3,and 4. I simply disagree that dts alone is ALWAYS an improvement over other releases. If , however , you do then good luck ! Thats whats great about this hobby, if you want it and you're able then go and get it !!

Enjoy it all,
Manus
