The mind boggles that this masterpiece didn't receive even a nomination from the Academy.
Actually, it was up for a number of Oscars - sound, sound editing, film editing, cinematography, screenplay and director. It wasn't up for foreign film, but it's the countries that decide which films to submit for nomination. The Academy can't vote for a film that hasn't been submitted.

Thanks, Nick. I just re-read Richard's review and indeed he does mention the six nominations, and your post explains what to him was inexplicable - why it wasn't nominated for best foreign film. I'm just going to have to be more careful in my reading!

Das Boot wasn't released in the U.S. until 1982, so it was nominated for the 1983 Academy Awards. The film which Germany nominated instead of Das Boot was an obscure movie called A Woman in Flames, which did not make it into the final five. The winner for Best Foreign Language film that year was a Spanish film, Volver a Empezar (released in the U.S. as To Begin Again).

I'm on the fence on picking this one up. I've bought it three times so far (original flipper, upgrade, miniseries - which I have not watched yet!). Last time I watched it I felt it was too long for repeated viewings. I would like to pick it up for it's upgraded picture and sound quality. I'd love to crank up the volume during the action scenes (no matter how much my wife will complain).

I seem to recall that it was difficult to properly mic the sub so even the German version is mostly dubbed. Given that, and due to this film's length, I usually choose the English version to watch (tho I agree the original audio/subtitled is the way to go).
