If memory serves me, he did a great version of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz also.

Dave you are correct, I copied the tracks from amazon and it gave her no credit. I also have the Laserdisc with all the videos....great!!!! The butthole surfers doing underdog is another standout.
I have a EP of Liz doing Turning Japanese by herself, you are right - it's betterthat way.

I just picked up the Cure's "Join the Dots" and it has two bizzare covers Bowie's Young Americans and Hendrick's Purple Haze

I made a tape many years back and managed to merge Frank Sinatra's I did it my way with the Sex Pistol's version with Sid singing. I still love to listen to that one:D

I think the best recent cover I've heard is Dwight Yoakam's version of Cheap Tricks "I Want You to Want Me".
Others:
E Costello- Nick Lowe's "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding.
Tom Jones- Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House"
Talking Heads'- Al Green's "Take Me to the River"
Bryan Ferry- any of his Bob Dylan's covers especially "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall"
Stone Temple Pilots-Beatles' "Revolution" at the John Lennon Tribute Show

How do artists in concert calculate royalties on cover songs they do during the show? Tally the head count and pay per head or a flat fee?

Some of my favorites:

Van Halen's "You Really Got Me".
Aerosmiths "Come Together"
The Cures "Purple Haze"

There was also a remake of Norman Greenbaums' Spirit in the Sky that was pretty cool but I have no idea who did it.

I don't know how comprehensive this is, but I thought it might be of interest cover song database

That was Doctor and the Medics. I saw the video the other day and I may be insane, but if you look at the lead guy closely, he could be Chris Isaak.

Two more to add to the list: Metallica covering Thin Lizzy's Whiskey in the Jar and the multi-covered Suspicious Minds (I think I prefer Dwight Yoakum's version).

Steve

Oh yeah, Minor Threat's cover of The Monkees Steppin' Stone.

Michael Hein, you get down with your bad Bruce Cockburn self!

Phil: Tom Jones' cover of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" was featured prominently in a movie recently. Was it The Jerky Boys, or does my memory totally fail me?

My favorite covers:

Soundgarden doing Devo's "Girl U Want."
Mark Heard doing The Beatles' "I'm Looking Through You."
Sheryl Crow doing Dylan's "Mississippi."
Kansas rocking the s### out of "Eleanor Rigby."
Adrian Belew doing The Traveling Wilburys' "You're Not Alone Anymore."
Bruce Cockburn doing Mark Heard's "Strong Hand of Love."
Annie Haslam and Steve Howe doing Yes' "Turn of the Century."

Worst cover:

Dan Fogelberg doing Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time."

Thanks Tony-B, I didn't know they did that...I just bought it off of iTunes, but the other 'Less than Jake' songs weren't available. What CD's are 'Greased Lightning' and 'Jenny Jenny' on? I can't seem to find it.

Oh, and don't forget the 80's covers from "Not Another Teen Movie":
If You Leave - Good Charlotte
Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson
I Melt With You - Mest

I don't think I'd like that cover of Shout at all. I can't imagine anyone but Tears for Fears singing that song.

Greased Lightning is on Greased, which a CD with a bunch of covers from Grease that they did. I wouldn't buy it because the album is extremely short.

Jenny is on Losers, Kings, and Other Things We Don't Understand.

A strange one:-
Sheryl Crow covering G'N'R's Sweet Child 'O Mine.

But GNR's cover of Knockin' On Heaven's Door was brilliant. Slash's solo of the Godfather Theme is pretty good too.

I heard a cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb recently on the radio, which was absolutely horrendous. No idea who's responsible for the travesty, though.
